Yet still no girlfriend appearing on the show and Saara has been on in VTs saying she hasnt seen any of her family or friends in months, yet there she is hanging out with her girlfriend after the shows...the show isn't that accepting.

We've seen camp contestants but I don't believe we've ever seen a LGBT contestant's partner on the main show. Maybe Xtra Factor I don't watch that and neither do most of the audience.

Yeah, I don't think it's a good or bad thing to be open about it but it is brave as a woman because women aren't very well accepted when they're LGBT. I've got a sister who identifies as lesbian and I know what she's been through with it.

For me Lucy Spraggan was much more 'open' on her series than Saara has been. I don't ever recall Saara mentioning her sexuality on the show or the show itself acknowledging it. Whereas Lucy performed a rendition of Kanye West's Gold Digger surrounded by and flirting openly with females.

IMO, public acceptance of a lesbian is a lot easier sell than public acceptance of an out gay male.

I've been a Saara fan since her audition, but I'd no idea she was LGBT. Probably because I haven't seen any newspaper or mag interviews.

I really can't stand the term LGBT community - makes it seem like a separate movement. We're the same.

It's not that we are all the same, what a boring world it would be if we were. We can recognise that we are different but we should not discriminate or hold prejudices because of it.

The same as in people. We become obsessed with labelling. defining or tagging people as something which just leads to more prejudice .

In this thread: straight people swearing blind that identity doesn't matter, we're all the same in the one breath while claiming that homophobic institutions denying visibilty to LGBT people and letting us know that we exist and are normal is a-okay too.

You can't have it both ways. Are we equal and normal or are we not? Flip it around, if sexuality can't be a thing, isn't important, then that means no-one should sing songs about love at all, boys, girls, or have a partner of opposite sex on TV because sexuality doesn't matter!! Sure, it doesn't matter - in that case I don't need to SEE that you're heterosexual!! It's fine to just BE heterosexual and not mention or draw attention to it...

On another note, it always sticks in my craw when contestants covering songs originally sung by someone of the opposite sex feel the necessity - or the show does for them - to change the gender of the person they're singing about or to, just in case it comes across as gay. Because that matters, clearly...

I agree about changing the gender references in songs either way, it's obviously a bit silly to say the least. I don't believe that people should really call themselves homosexual, I just don't see the point. Just do what you want and if anyone has a problem with it, then make it a massive problem - really rub it in their faces. As for calling yourself heterosexual, there's really no point in that, everyone assumes everyone is anyway. For now though, we live in a world where people use these labels and it's not for heterosexual people to tell any self-identifying LGBT+ people what they should call themselves.
