A plane carrying 81 people, including a Brazilian football team, has crashed on its approach to the city of Medellin in Colombia, officials say.
The chartered plane, flying from Bolivia, was carrying members of the Chapecoense football team, airport officials said.
The team was due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Medellin team Atletico Nacional.
The first leg of the final of the cup, South America's second most important club competition, was scheduled for Wednesday, but has now been suspended.
The team, from the city of Chapeco, was promoted to Brazil's first division in 2014 and reached the final last week after a victory against Argentina's San Lorenzo.

Reports are suggesting that there are survivors. Hope this is true

Just waking up to this news, how incredibly sad.

As a fan whose club has been through something very similar, my heart goes out to all of their family and friends, this is such devastating news.

Just so sad, add this to the tragic flights involving Torino and Manchester United, these things just bring home how mortal we all are.

Only six survivors, three of which are from the football team apparently.

Absolutely awful and shocking news.

I hope the club survive.
To those players, coaches who may not have travelled, I pray they continue as a tribute to those who died.

Will their be a silence observed at the EFL Cup games and England Ladies friendly tonight?

From what I have seen there wasn't any silence held in the world cup semi's earlier today.

Barcelona and Real Madrid had a minute's silence in their training session's today. You'd think thee would be – especially for any teams with Brazilian players.

Terrible, such sad news

Seeing pics of them on the plane prior to take off, so sad.

RIP

Hard to believe there were any survivors!

I know it's only early but any news on possible cause?

Reportedly ran out of fuel.

The picture of the three players who didn't travel, in the otherwise empty dressing room, is heartbreaking.

According to the airport authorities in Medellin, the crew had initially declared an electrical emergency. It then entered a holding pattern briefly, before proceeding toward the airport.

On the face of it (and as I've also seen noted elsewhere) it seems a rather curious choice of aircraft type to cover a journey of that distance. I think fuel starvation is a likely line of enquiry.

Sometimes it shocks you how fleeting life and moments in it are as well as the fact that you can be celebrating traveling to a cup final and videoed in the airport and then a few hours later, all those people laughing and joking are gone.

It is just heightened because of the fact it was a smaller team who were on the up, everything was going their way. You don't think how these things can happen.

It wasn't the planned plane they were supposed to be travelling on.

They circled to dump fuel.

"The Avro RJ85 plane, which was carrying nine crew, suffered power failures while flying through the Antioquia Department on its way from Bolivia. The pilot is believed to have circled around before crash landing in a desperate bid to lose fuel and avoid an explosion on impact."

I'm wary about that quote at present, as it appears to be unattributed to anyone.

Whilst dumping fuel would be one reason for holding, if the situation was so dire at that point that a crash landing was their only option, whether they'd have had sufficient control over the aircraft to do that must be questionable.

Apparently their opponents in the upcoming cup final have asked that they be crowned champions which is an amazing gesture

In addition to this, Brazilian clubs have said they will loan players without fees to Chapecoense for 2017, and they've asked they be exempt from relegation for a while. I mean, in this sort of situation, what else can you do?

And in terms of the minute silence question. Newcastle have announced their players will be wearing black armbands tonight, and there will be a minute's silence before their match v Hull.

A great gesture, but you then have the issue from a purely sporting point of view of how can they partake in tournaments that are for the winners (Suruga Bank Championship, and the Recopa Sudamericana), presumably Nacional will take their place, but Chapecoense will still have the title on their honours board.

They can take part in it or not, depending on what they and the football authorities decide. It won't be an issue in the slightest

I don't think that's really an issue at all. And I doubt anyone in Brazil will really give two hoots if the rules are not exactly adhered to for one season.

I hope that they can take part in future games and tournaments, as it would provide such inspiring images and hope for the future.

I agree that I don't think it will matter if the rules are bent slightly over this, I was only talking about the actual practicalities of who will play in the future tournaments and games, as a team will presumably take the spot in each respective tournament, and I hope that is the team that suffered this horrendous ordeal, as it would bring so much hope for the future if they did.

Apparently PSG are donating 40 million to Chapecoense. Decent gesture. Other clubs will no doubt follow suit.

I did wonder if clubs will loan them players. One of my favourite Bill Shankly stories was how he offered to loan players to Matt Busby after the Munich air disaster.

Between that and all the other kind gestures towards them from the rest of Brazilian football it shows the goodness in people.

I imagine English clubs will be having their silences. I don't know if it will be too soon for tonight's League Cup games, but if not during the League Cup then definitely the next league games.

Fan talk else where wondering if United and Torino would play each other in a charity match with monies going to Chapecoense. It would be a great gesture from two clubs who have suffered similar tragedies to make. I'd go further and would take the game to Brazil either at the end of the season or part of pre-season.

I felt sick on hearing the news as it broke on the radio this morning. I sleep with the radio on overnight, and don't normally sleep through. I awoke as the news broke, it's been a rather horrible day, the images of the team from last week, before the flight and those that didn't travel.

I hope they (the club) find inspiration in other sporting clubs that have had similar tragedies and rebuilt themselves, it is possible and with the good will being shown by clubs in Brazil and I no doubt the rest of South America, let alone around the world, it will be done.

I like that idea about the two clubs playing a match, that would seem very poignant and respectful, I hope that it can be done.

Unlike days gone by, air travel is considered so safe that it is most likely that there would have been family and friends of the players on board too. RIP
