My 12 year old cat who I've had for 4 months (he had nowhere else to go) has got mega colon, the vet prescribed something called Cisapride which hasn't helped, I'm supposed to give him Lactulose (a laxative that you can buy in the chemists) but it makes him vomit. He constantly gets on his litter tray & strains - but nothing comes out, he does very little in the way of poo; he's had an enema - that was in August; today his bottom has been leaking & I've been cleaning it as he doesn't do it himself. I can't afford a private vet, I tried to get an appointment at the PDSA but they just told me to dilute the lactulose (I do understand that they're a charity).

Did you try diluting it as they suggested to see if it helped?

Op it's absolutely wonderful you are offering this cat a home but it needs proper vet care, might it be better to hand it to cats protection league where they can get if the help it needs. It doesn't make what you are trying to do any less wonderful but might get the cat what it needs more easily.

I've only just started him on the diluted Lactulose - so I haven't been able to establish yet whether or not it works.

The thing is in recent times he's been 'passed from pillar to post' somewhat & his best feline friend died, he seems settled here & I don't want him to have more upheaval.

But you can't afford the treatment he needs, sometimes you have to make decisions on that alone. From my experience cats protection are great at rehoming and will do best thing for the cat.

Diluted Lactulose is worse than neat Lactulose, he has been very sick today.

Unfortunately he died; he came home after having the enema & was groggy from the anaesthetic as to be expected, but he was not himself & would not eat the next day (yesterday), you see as well as his colon problems he had a heart problem - and due to this anaesthetic was quite dangerous for him (he had to have the enema though - he was very clogged up with poo), I had a follow-up appointment for him this afternoon but he did not make it that long - he died in his sleep at some point in the early hours of this morning.
