Why has this happened cos it's still on air and it's a decent channel ? Could it just be Sony are going to change the name ?

I was about to create a thread on this but it does seem odd that it's still on air even though the license has been removed.

It's possibly due to a namechange of the licence holder - there are now two different licences under 'SonyMovieChannel'.

Was this the Movie Mix licence held by Cellcast's Square 1 Management subsidiary or has this been in Sony's name for a while now?

Hopefully they'll change the name to Sony movies or Sony entertainment sounds better than movie mix.

Maybe they'll show some other movies, other than Die Hard and Predator. I've noticed they seem to 'share' movies with Film 4 also.

It's been in Sony's name for a long time, ever since Sony acquired the channel.

The licence holder is the same, it's just that the channel is now licensed as the Sony Movie Channel rather than Movie Mix.

They already have the Sony Movie Channel brand to use.

That's what I meant, but didn't phrase it very well.

Why could they not just bring Sony Movie Channel to Freeview, its not like it has premium movies? Why do Sony need 2 different movie channelsshowing that show a lot of the same movies?

It's to do with Freeview's current EPG policy, because Sony wouldn't want to loose their valuable position high up, they aren't allowed to just remove a TV channel and re-use the slot for a different one, hence the very long slow transition from The Big Deal way back.

The proposed EPG policy changes relax these rules meaning it should be possible in the future.

Sony Movie Channel in the US is a premium HD channel but if it's going to continue as it is in the UK then joining Freeview is logical.

Oh joy, another film channel the output of which will be interrupted every 10 minutes or so by lengthy commercial breaks.

Which is happening on the 10th of January, although the schedules are near identical before then.

Makes sense as Movie Mix is on Freeview and Virgin, Sony Movies in on Sky. Branding it all the same means they have one channel on all three platforms.

Although it would be nice to see Sony Movies on Freeview, I see no reputable source reporting this.

What we do have is some circumstantial evidence that Sony might be going to do something else ↓

True Entertainment + 1

(could be used as a tool to get True Entertainment on channel 60, with a +1 on 61 - either nationally, or just on the Manchester mux.)

Bit of a random stretch to look for them doing something else, rather than just using the Sony Movies licence to launch Sony Movies like they are.
