Need a new smartphone
but can't decide which OS as I've had experience with both
Google- has more apps Windows phone- Has less apps but my downloaded films are on it. I don't want to spend more than 70 quid. |

When you say your downloaded films are on Windows Phone, what exactly do you mean? Did you buy them from Microsoft or something? There are plenty of Android apps available for streaming / downloading movies. |

Lol! At least make it a slightly more difficult choice by including iOS.
Windows mobile is dying (sadly - I think we need another big player) if not already dead. It's not a sensible choice for anyone except large corporates who might have an existing investment in it. |

Id say Android.
I got a Moto G4 Play last week. It's far better than Windows Phone. The iPlayer app doesn't crash as it does on Windows Phone all the time. There are more features such as USB tethering and the range of apps is far better. |

Windows Mobile has fewer apps and quite a few developers have withdrawn app support within the last year. It is a dying platform although Microsoft have continued to support it throwing bad money after more bad money. Basically its a money pit! They really should cut their losses and kill it. Plus its market share is shrinking faster and faster.
The good news is if you are on EE the 550, 650 and 950 (XL) support VoLTE. The 550 is the cheapest VoLTE handset you can buy. |

I'd go with the Windows Phone. Android is just too unsafe for mainstream use unless you are willing to invest in anti virus, and other smartphone security products. Just my opinion, I know there are many people happy running the roulette tables with Android.

Android is no more insecure than Windows or iOS for that matter. |

A load of utter tosh as usual.

If you don't need the range of Apps there are bargains to be had in Windows Phones just now (and they come with the most useful functions built-in) |

A nice article here about different phone OS and security.

Android in it's stock form is no more insecure than Windows or iOS. Considering iOS has had a few crackers recently on how to bypass lock screens simply using Siri, i don't think anyone should be claiming Android is insecure!
Whatever chinese manufacturers put on has nothing to do with Android security as a whole. I have a Windows phone, Lumia 535 and just rolled it back to Windows Mobile 8.1. Apps are an issue in terms of choice, eBay just abandoned their windows app for example, not that it worked properly in the first place. I got it unlocked and it got the Win 10 update right away as well as lots of further OS updates. |

I am considering the Blackberry DTEK50 or 60 as a possible replacement for if and when my Windows 8.1 phone goes tits up as they supposedly run a hardened version of Android?

£70 gets you a horrible Android phone, maybe even with a resistive touchscreen, probably running an ancient version like 4.x. But it gets you a pretty reasonable Windows phone. |

I haven't voted because I think that both Android and Windows Phone are good operating systems aimed at different users.
Android - for the technically minded, the PC user and the app-centric, social media loving gamer. Ideal for people who like to customise their experience. Windows Phone - for people who want a no-fuss, simple to use operating system that does everything a smartphone should do. Ideal for the elderly.

It's a simple to use OS that does everything a smartphone should do that you can customise. iOS falls into this catagory as well apart from the customising bit. Windows phone, while a great idea is dead and not worthwhile investing in at any price |

I voted Google as I have never been a big fan of Windows phones. Plus Google have more apps. I hardly use the Windows app store on my laptop and find the Windows version of the Facebook app on my laptop to be not as good as the Google app or the Facebook app on my IPhone.
I fully moved from Google(Android) to Apple when I got an IPhone 5s back in mid March. I have also had my IPad mini 4 just over 11 months now. Darren |
