Well kind of

Some guy recorded it in the 70's but it never went any further than a rough demo.

Try Robert Hazzard 1979, a bit before Cyndy's version.

Peggy Lee's "Fever"
She rewrote some lyrics but the original was recorded by Little Willie John.

Agree with many of them, but no way is Bananarama's version of "Venus" superior to the original by Shocking Blue.

Go here at the 3:18 mark for the first ever recording by my late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal.

God bless you and his family always!!!

Holly

P.S. Go here and here for his renditions of "I Knew You When" and "Yo Yo" which were both later on done by the Osmond family. "I Knew You When" was also done later on by Linda Ronstadt. Go here for his rendition of "Steal Away" which was later on done by Etta James.

The Jacksons - Blame it on the Boogie.

Originally recorded by its co-writer Mick Jackson. I like his version a lot even though the famous bassline is nowhere to be heard - we have the arrangement for The Jacksons' version to thank for that.

The Carpenters - Superstar.

Co-written by the late, great Leon Russell and originally recorded by its other co-writers Bonnie and Delaney Brammett (credited to Delaney and Bonnie & Friends feat Eric Clapton). I believe the next version released was on Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen album with lead vocal by Rita Coolidge.

As it's close to Crimbo I'd also suggest that both The Eagles' and Jon Bon Jovi's covers of Please Come Home for Christmas are more famous than the original by Charles Brown , who also co-wrote it.

Denise - Blondie
Their covers are great examples of being better known than the originals.

In addition to 'Denis' ('Denise' by Randy & the Rainbows), there is also:

Hanging on the Telephone, which was originally recorded by The Nerves. Jack Lee*, who wrote Hanging on the Telephone, was a member of The Nerves.

The Tide is High, originally by the Paragons.

* Jack Lee also wrote Come Back and Stay, famously recorded by Paul Young.

I said "better known", not necessarily superior to the original version, which of course is purely a matter of opinion.

I forgot to add The Belle Stars - The Clapping Song.
