I think the Carpenters version of Close To You is better known than any other version

George Harrison - Got My Mind Set On You
The original was by James Ray in the early 60s. I think it was recently used in an advert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k68Fob0QA_k |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lrvuAs-EJE I know PWL had a few songs done by other artists in their stable before they became more known by others i.e. Mandy Smith did Got To Be Certain before Kylie but now some of their back catalogue has made it onto streaming services I've just found out Princess (Say I'm Your Number One) did If It Makes You Feel Good on her album before Donna Summer did on Another Place and Time. |

Steps - Tragedy
I wonder if Al Green's version of "How Can You Mend I Broken Heart" may be more well known than the Bees Gees original... |

Marvin Gaye's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" may be better known than Gladys Knight & the Pips original.
Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" might be better known than Ewan MacColl's. Aretha Franklin's version of "I Say a Little Prayer" is probably better known than Dionne Warwick's. |

Daddy's home - Cliff Richard is well known in UK, but the original by Shep and the Limelites is better known in America.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxhkE6Qj7NA As I'm sort of half watching the UB40 documentary on BBC 4 now I'd also suggest their version of Kingston Town is undoubtedly better known than Lord Creator's. |

As I can read, I'm fully aware of what the op asked. I completely disagree but then that's hardly a shock. I would say Roberta flacks version is far better known though neither version is played these days
Bit of a moot point though as the latter was also a cover. |

like 'tragedy' theres a whole new generation that were unaware of these original hits, for example i didnt know that blondies 'denis', or the clash 'i fought the law' were covers when they first came out. did you?.. |

"I think we're alone now" Tiffany (original by Tommy James and the Shondells)
"Make you feel me Love" Adele (Original by Dylan). "The tide is high", Blondie and later..Atomic Kitten..(original by The Paragons ). "Dont leave me this way", The Communards..(original by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes) Btw..my rather crude 'test' for 'better known' consists of doing a google search on title and seeing what's first. |

You think that's better known than the Tears for Fears version. I don't think so. It maybe more modern but that doesn't mean it's better known.
