Natalie Imbruglia - Torn
I started reading this thread at the last page back to the first thinking "oohh, natalie imbruglia and ednaswap..nobody's thought of that one!" and there you are, in the very first post

In case anyone hasn't heard Ednaswap's version, which is brilliant

Which version of Always On My Mind do we think is best known then? I think Elvis. Definitely not Willie Nelson. Maybe to some it's Pet Shop Boys though. First recorded by Gwen McCrae (as "You Were Always On My Mind") and Brenda Lee, both in 1972.

I have decided to deviate slightly from what the OP originally requested.

I do not consider the following covers to be better known than the originals (although they will be to some people), but I certainly consider them to be as well known as the originals:-

"With A Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker
(Original version by the Beatles)

"She's Not There" by Santana
(Original version by the Zombies)

"MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer
(Original version by Richard Harris)

"Dear Prudence" by Siouxsie and the Banshees
(Original version by the Beatles)

"Viva Las Vegas" by ZZ Top
(Original version by Elvis Presley)

"Wonderwall" by Mike Flowers Pops
(Original version by Oasis)

Surprised at people not knowing about the Jon & Vangelis one. I thought it had a fair bit of radio play back in the day.

Laura Branigan - Self Control
Laura Branigan was the queen of taking europop songs and making them bigger hits in the US.

Gloria (originally by Umberto Tozzi, though Branigan did create new English lyrics).
Solitaire (originally a minor French hit by Martine Clémenceau, again with new English lyrics).
The Power of Love (Obviously the Jennifer Rush version is better known in the UK but the Branigan cover was bigger in the US.... well until Celine did her version).

Branigan also did the original version of "How am I supposed to live without you" but writer Michael Bolton's later version is better known.

The Wind Beneath my Wings was recording originally by Roger Whittaker and had been recorded a number of times, including Sheena Easton before Bette Midler got her hands on it.

Also "From a Distance" was a Nancy Griffiths song made famous by Bette.

Hazell Dean's "Who's Leaving Who" was a cover of an Ann Murray song.

A number of Jules Shear's songs went on to be better known under other artists, Cyndi Lauper's "All through the Night", The Bangle's "If She Knew What She Wants" and Alison Moyet's "Whispering Your Name".

I have always thought that that that song originated much earlier than the sixties, so I would suggest that the version you heard on "Sound Of The Sixties" this morning is also a cover.

I have just checked the notes for the 1982 hit version by Fun Boy Three and Bananarama on www.everyhit.com (excellent website), which states the following:-

Originally recorded by Jimmy Lunceford & His Orchestra as T'ain't What You Do (1939).

The death of Rick Parfitt prompts me to mention

Rockin' All Over The World

Not a Quo original as many assume, but written and first recorded in 1975 by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
