Welcome to 1983 on Top Of The Pops.

It's coming sooner than you think. Below are the "provisional" transmission dates for the kicking off of the brand new year for TOTP on BBC4, as supplied to me, so I take no responsibility for their accuracy or not, but it sounds a familiar set up.

The Story Of 1983 - Friday 6th January 2017 @ 10pm on BBC4.

Big Hits 1983 following on an hour later @ 11pm.

No information on the first actual edition of the year proper, possibly the night before on the Thursday 5th and which edition this would be seems open to doubt currently.

Any further information regarding TOTP 1983 is welcomed here in the meantime.

Great to have 1983 and what a year it was for Music with the first Now That's I Call Music albums and the end for Top of the Pops dance troupes.

Will we get a full 1983 uninterupted run or will it be more BS to remove episodes?

No, the Yew Tree two & JK still make appearances, plus the jury is still out on Mike Smith.

I hadn't realised that Mike Smith was a sex-offender, perhaps he wasn't, but the BBC pigeon holing him with Savile, DLT and King make it appear that he was. I hope there's a BBC announcement about this, otherwise Mike Smith will be forever tarnished like the others.

Whether you like the songs or not, the majority of the No1s in 1983 are still played today. Lots of major artists hitting No1 in 1983. Also we get the chart positions with the title and artist before the song later in 1983 and Gallup start compiling the chart which gets mentioned in the first few weeks.

To be honest im getting sick of the whole thing. It seems like we are going through in circles year after year.

I remember a user was sharring the episodes on vimeo but BBC obviously took offense to that.

How many episodes from 83 are likely to be removed.

Currently 11, but if they take out the Mike Smith episodes then it'll be 7 more, that's 18 episodes cut

I've posted in 1982 this afternoon confirming that Mike Smith's shows won't be shown:

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...ostcount=11867

On this basis, here are the 1983 shows that we will see

13/01/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
20/01/83 (Gary Davies & Janice Long)
27/01/83 (Simon Bates & Richard Skinner)
03/02/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
10/02/83 (Janice Long & Pat Sharp)
17/02/83 (Gary Davies & Peter Powell)
03/03/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
17/03/83 (Tony Blackburn & Gary Davies)
23/03/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
31/03/83 (Richard Skinner & Steve Wright)
07/04/83 (Simon Bates & Peter Powell with the cast of Fame)
14/04/83 (Gary Davies & Andy Peebles)
21/04/83 (Janice Long & Richard Skinner)
28/04/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
12/05/83 (Mike Read & Tommy Vance)
19/05/83 (Simon Bates & Gary Davies)
26/05/83 (Peter Powell & Pat Sharp)
08/06/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
23/06/83 (Simon Bates & Peter Powell)
30/06/83 (Richard Skinner & Tommy Vance)
07/07/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
14/07/83 (Andy Peebles & Peter Powell)
28/07/83 (Janice Long & Mike Read)
11/08/83 (Richard Skinner & Tommy Vance)
01/09/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
08/09/83 (Andy Peebles & Peter Powell)
22/09/83 (Simon Bates & Mike Read)
06/10/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
13/10/83 (Peter Powell & Richard Skinner)
20/10/83 (Janice Long & Andy Peebles)
03/11/83 (Peter Powell & Mike Read)
10/11/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
24/11/83 (Simon Bates & Richard Skinner)
08/12/83 (Mike Read & Tommy Vance)
15/12/83 (Simon Bates & Janice Long)
22/12/83 (David Jensen & John Peel)
29/12/83 (Gary Davies, Adrian John, Peter Powell, Richard Skinner & Tommy Vance)

Still 37 in total, so a comparable amount with other years. Good news for Kid & Peel fans, as TOTP's own dynamic duo present 11 of these together.

Edit: All this is assuming there are no more "surprises" in store.

Men at work - Down under
The tracks in bold aside, I'd quite gladly skip an awful lot of those - but that's the beauty of us all having different tastes!

For me, 1983 is more about the following (in no particular order) …

The Crown | Gary Byrd & The GB Experience
Tour De France | Kraftwerk
Let The Music Play | Shannon
Church Of The Poison Mind Culture Club
White Lines | Grandmaster & Melle Mel
Love Town | Booker Newberry III
Billie Jean | Michael Jackson
It’s Over | The Funkmasters
The Paris Match EP | The Style Council
Happiness Is Just Around The Bend | Cuba Gooding
I Am Somebody | Glenn Jones
State Farm | Yazoo
Rockit | Herbie Hancock
Weekend | Class Action
Go Deh Yaka | Monyaka
Body Work | Hot Streak
My Jamaican Guy | Grace Jones
War Baby | Tom Robertson
Last Night A DJ Saved My Life | Indeep
You Can’t Hide Your Love (From Me) | David Joseph
Pills And Soap | The Imposter
Just Be Good To Me | The SOS Band

And I'm sure there must be some more I've forgotten …

This is a done deal and the best thing is to get the BBC to create some extra compilations from the episodes we shan't see. It can't be that tricky/expensive.

Still it makes you wonder why they go to all the effort in recovering lost TOTP episodes if they wont ever be shown. Rare footage shouldnt be locked away never to be seen in the light of day.

You're kidding! Is THAT why so many episodes haven't been shown, because of who the presenters were?! How ridiculous! Why on earth can't they just edit those episodes to just show the performers and cut out the presenters intros/links?! How ridiculous that some great TOTP's appearances won't ever be seen again just because of who hosted the show they were on! They should just edit the hosts out and, if that makes an episode too short join it up with another episode they'd planned not to show, cut the host parts out again and just have a special few shows of performances only. At least those performances get to be seen and enjoyed!

The problem with editing out the links between the songs (something that is suggested a great deal here and elsewhere) is that it would continually draw the viewer's attention towards what's been removed. Every time it went straight from one song to the next, everyone would be thinking "ah, something's been cut out there, it must be because Jimmy Savile or DLT was presenting this edition". The BBC would certainly not want to keep reinforcing that association between TOTP and certain Yewtree personalities in the viewer's mind. (Whether the BBC should be 'respecting the wishes' of the late Mike Smith, on the other hand, is another issue entirely).

Plus, no one ever has an answer about what to about the chart rundowns which feature the presenter voiceover - should they be cut out as well? You can't have Top of the Pops without the charts!

We are very fortunate that the repeat run continued at all after the scandals of late 2012, and has managed to carry on this long, I think simply skipping over problem episodes is the safest way to proceed - better to have some episodes shown than none at all - and perhaps making more effort to show Yewtreed performances where possible in the Big Hits compilations.

Yeah and every time people try to watch Jimmy Saville episodes on sites like Vimeo/dailymotion the BBC gets arsy and has them removed.

I know they aquired a bunch of 60s stuff that Jimmy was hosting that we wont ever get to see. If the BBC get so funny with it why they just burn the master Tapes of Saville episodes because its obvious we wont ever get to see them.

Well at least the trading community has a bunch of his episodes so they wont ever wipe him out from history.
