Bit silly really that this is the case. Mike (and Sarah) would have benefited from repeat fees.

I think it's hard for a dead man to spend repeat fees.

Mike Smith was still alive when TOTP was started to be repeated by BBC Four. Surely he would have seen at the time that he would of benefited from an odd appearance fee for the shows he presented at some point in the future. Not sounding funny but Mike Smith's and Sarah Greene's broadcasting careers were hardly spectacular after the early 90's, rarely being seen on TV.

He left nearly £1.2 million in his will, so I think he could manage without the repeat fees.
So Greene may get her wish, in that respect - maybe she could start posting links to episodes?!?

Of course, one of the first things we will get in 1983 is Kajagoogoo, which brings to mind another great "Roundtable" moment - anyone else remember this?
Limahl is a guest, and Richard Skinner seems to be having trouble saying "Limahl". He asks him - "I read somewhere that your name is Chris - is it OK if I just call you Chris?". To which the reply is: "No, it's Limahl". The air goes out of the studio. |

It looks like the first weekly one will be on Friday 13th (Thursday 12th is showing as The Sky at Night), this should be the edition from exactly 34 years previously.

Never really liked Too Shy and didn't think it deserved to be a No.1.

Actually, I've just remembered that it didn't end there. Having refused to let Skinner call him Chris, Limahl started taking him to task on the pronunciation of the band name: "It's Ka-zha-goo-goo, not cadge-a-goo-goo"!
These poor people are having their middles squeezed 'til their intestines burst, revealing goo-goo, doo-doo & everything in-between, and I find the situation repellant (particularly the smell). It's a national disgrace. |

A pity New Order didn't do a video for Blue Monday in 1983 which means the only version on Top of the Pops was the mediocre live version they did in the studio in March. (They did do a video for the shortened 1988 version).
I always thought it was the band members who insisted on singing and playing live in the TOTP studio, but apparently it was their manager who advised them to do it. The band members weren't actually bothered about miming. |

The recent Glasto was the first time I've seen New Order acquit themselves well live. A notoriously awful live band up until recently.

A small tribute to TOTP's first and best ever female presenter - Janice Long - whom we will first be seeing on the January 20th 1983, with Gary Davies.
Janice on the "Yewtree'd" 30 December '82 edition With Pat Sharpe 10th February '83 With Mike Read - July 28th 1983 With Simon Bates 20 December '84 With John Peel 11th July 1985 (features soft rock version of Phil Lynott's Yellow Pearl) With Simon Mayo - 7 July '88 |

From everything I've seen (see the TOTP 82 thread), this isn't about money - it's about both him and Sarah Greene feeling bitter towards the BBC, presumably because their work opportunities started dwindling as the 90s wore on. Greene has even been suggesting that people watch Smith-hosted episodes online - i.e. via Youtube/Vimeo/whatever … which the BBC doesn't approve of and tries to remove. So I'm afraid we're caught up in a bit of a turf war between two sides who I'm guessing won't back down.
So Greene may get her wish, in that respect - maybe she could start posting links to episodes?!? ![]() Savile only appeared in five 1983 TOTP's, DLT in seven and Mike Smith six. It is somewhat unfortunate (for us) that Mike Smith appeared in TOTP until 1988, so we will be missing a fair few editions post 1984 after DLT and Savile disappeared from the show. For example Mike Smith appeared in two January 1987 editions that we won't be seeing. Sarah Greene should get her head out of her backside and let the BBC repeat the Mike Smith editions. Thus allowing us, the fans, to see him in his days on TOTP and for her to receive a small income from the repeats. |

look Ive never agreed with the approach the Beeb have taken to excising parts of TOTP from recorded history, but ultimately Mike Smith was perfectly entitled to withold his permission for his repeats, and Sarah is perfectly entitled to maintain her husbands wishes, you dont stay married for 25 years together by just saying well lets forget about all that to get a bit of money. |
