The Lotus Eaters one. I can't remember it to be honest. Maybe when it comes up ( if it comes up ) it might be one of those long forgotten gems I occasionally come across on TOTP. Liked the other 4 you listed.
It is.

Are you ready for the first edition of 1983? 6/1/83 hosted by Mike Smith and Tommy Vance.

A real shame we miss that episode as I'd say that is a classic one and very 80s.

Does the top 10 video countdown return during 1983? I know it was used for a while during 1981 and for I think one week in February 1982 with Mike Read. I can't remember it appearing during 1983 though.

'The First Picture of You' by The Lotus Eaters is a nice track and always reminds me of late summer '83. I think it'll go down well with a lot of forumites.

Not too sure on that one Andy. I was always a sucker for the Top 10 countdown with the clips. It was a nice build up to the No.1. I know they were doing it in '85 when King's 'Alone Without You' was in the Top 10. Now there was a tune!

It's one of those haunting songs of the 80s along with 'In Love With A German Film Star' and 'Duel' that always love hearing unexpectedly, or by choice when in the mood.

King's Bitter Sweet and Dead or Alive's Youthquake of 85 are defining albums of the year for me.

I like to listen to them one after the other.

Any chance that you or anyone can pop that on YouTube?

I am shocked you don't remember ''The First Picture Of You'', ramraider!
I will be surprised if you dislike it. It is definitely as good as it gets in 83, for me!

I have just had a horrible thought....

In the near future, the end of each TOTP will have "next week's edition will be presented by xxxxx". What is giong to happen when the following edition was hosted by JS or DLT? Are we to see further cuts?

The announcement of 'next Week's presenter' has been cut from 1982 episodes when they feature 'they who must not be named', so presumably Mike Smith's name will also be added to ze list of 'they who must not be named' for continuity purposes in 1983, so yes a further edit where necessary (unless it's plastered all over the screen like the ad for the 1982 Christmas Day edition), in which case your guess is as good as mine Mark.

I can't say for certain, but I strongly suspect there's a top ten video countdown on the 3rd March 1983 edition, which we should be seeing as Peelie and Jensen were hosting.

It's time for the BBC to stop being so silly. When Mike Smith's name is mentioned as a presenter for the next show they ought to leave it in. I think we can all cope with the fact that he won't actually be presenting the next show.

It's not the viewers they are worried about with Smith.

Leaving him out is quite bad for his reputation, as many people will assume that it's because he did something .... dodgy. Sarah ought to think about that.

I don't mind ''The Crown'' by Gary Byrd. Another track from 83 i rather like is ''Christian'' by China Crisis. I particularly like the bass playing.
Yes.

Yes - I remember my school friend playing it a lot over the Summer holidays!

The above 3 acts -.Gary Byrd, China Crisis & The Lotus Eaters had probably some of the best songs of 1983, although I'm sure I'll be reminded of a few more over the coming weeks.

A few tracks that I like/remind me of 83 (especially the summer months):

Heaven 17 - Temptation

Level 42 - Living it up (the sun goes down)

Style Council - Long Hot Summer - as indeed it was

Phil Fearon/Galaxy - Dancing Tight

Yazoo - Nobody's Diary

Flash and the pan - Waiting for a train.

Just thinking of my V back candy striped dress from Clockhouse at C&A ....... it looked okay at the time

I had some lovely dresses then. But they took some finding as everything seemed to have elasticated waists which made me look like a parcel. And the shoulder pads! I used to take out the padding as they made me look like an American footballer.

I had a gorgeous V neck crushed velvet dress in midnight blue that was ruched up the front, and a snake-patterned dress with a boned bodice, no sleeves or straps. Wish I could get into them now if I still had them!

They sound a lot more glamorous than mine! Mine were either from Chelsea Girl or C &A

And those three also! - Especially 'Temptation' - possibly the best song of the year!
