Pleased to report that The Lotus Eaters will be on BBC4 twice, they've just managed to avoid the cull which decimates most of August.

They could well have been from there, or Top Shop, Wallis and Principles. Yes, they were "going out" dresses, not everyday wear!

(Apologies for going off topic, I know it isn't an 80s fashion thread). |

When I was 14 (summer 82), I was browsing in Top Shop and an older women asked me a question as if I worked there. I was absolutely made up, I was wearing a black ra-ra skirt and a pink velour sleeveless top and thought I must look pretty cool to be mistaken for a Top Shop assistant.
(Apologies for going off topic, I know it isn't an 80s fashion thread). well I can remember having a jean-suit where the jacket had this huge eagle on the back... well it was 1973! Mum bought it in the Oxford Street store. C&A was fab.

They still have stores in Berlin and Amsterdam. I bought something out of both this year when traveling and used the bags as part of an 80s fancy dress costume.
And now... back to TOTP!

Watched the 6th January edition this evening - a great shame that we won't see this one as it features the only appearance of "The Story Of The Blues" - I remember John Peel playing this a lot at the time. Great record, with Pete Wylie following in the footsteps of Marc Almond in being unafraid to belt out a song while not necessarily hitting exactly all the right notes.
Also love "Stepping Out" by Joe Jackson, particularly the chord sequence at the start of each verse. Joe seems to give up the idea of miming the vocals by the end of the song. I don't have any memory of the Stranglers' "European Female" - surprised to find that it reached the top 10, as it doesn't seem to me to have the commercial appeal of "Golden Brown". Watching Phil Collins doing "You Can't Hurry Love", I was wondering "was Buster really that early?" - the answer is no, it was actually five years later and "Two Hearts" was the song from it, but it's not difficult to hear how I might have got confused between the two! The rest of it is songs that we've heard/missed before - thankfully no more "Save Your Love" after this one. Tommy Vance is on top form in this one, and easily outshines Mike Smith, I think. |
