This thread reminds me I need to rewatch Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes again, it's been a while!

Yes, if I could go back to 1981 and be 15 again, and be more confident about myself and see my dad again who I still miss so much, especially this time of year.

Can you be sure you haven't already lived your life multiple times?

If I could go back with all the knowledge I have now then sure, why not? It would be interesting to replay everything and be able to make better decisions.
It would be great. A chance to rectify the mistakes I made but even better I'd have knowledge of what was going to happen in certain events. Sports, election results etc. Could make a fortune betting or by posing as the world's most convincing psychic.

Imagine actually knowing for certain that Leicester City were going to win the league last season at odds of 500/1 and also that Trump and Brexit would win which were seen as long shots at varying times. Would of course make sure I got into bitcoin early too.

If you all like this kind of thing, read Replay by Ken Grimwood - my favourite book It's about a man who does exactly that, has a heart attack and wakes up 18 again, knowing all he knows now. Except that, when he reaches that age again, he dies again and has to go through it all again (knowing what he does from both lives he lived), and so on!

It's a brilliant book, I got it when it was released in 1986 and have read it once a year since. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_(Grimwood_novel)

Id like to wake up on the first day of the summer holidays, when i was 14. In 1994.

Id like to make two changes.

But, does time necessarily play out the same way if you go back into it? I have often thought that, if you watch a football match then go 2 hours back in time and watch it again, whether it could produce a different result.

It would be interesting trying to convince my family that me going to college would be a waste of my time, on the basis that I've already lived the following ten years and witnessed that for myself.

I used to conduct this thought experiment as a child. At school when I was about 9 or 10, I used to wonder what it would be like to have a sort of "Groundhog Year" whereby you had to go to school and do the same work over and over again.

Isn't that called "being a teacher"?

Coming to think of it, that's probably what it's like being a teacher. Except you deal with curriculum changes, new working practices and different kids each year.

That made me laugh!

But maybe that's how the bright kids breezed through school? They had done each year over and over again until they got everything perfect?

I can't see why it wouldn't be the same unless you did something to make it different. That thing could even be tiny in theory, like going to the stadium and cheering vs. staying at home and watching on tv. Who knows, your one extra voice in the crowd could have made your team feel that bit more encouraged or even nervous if they felt the pressure of expectation?

If you sat at home and watched both on the telly, not going anywhere near the ground, never interacting with anyone involved I'm not sure how would make a difference.

I suppose if I was a legendary gambler then news might get out that I'd been placing large bets on Leicester to win the league. That could have an impact on the mindset of the players. Same if I went to use my knowledge of what happened first time round to be a tv psychic. Some of the players might've watched me doing my best Uri Geller impression, and that could have give them extra confidence, over confidence or they could even have been dismissive. It might even only take one player or member of staff to be aware of me to have an impact.

I've often fantasized about this but with a view to changing events which have been catastrophic in my lifetime. Taking just two for example, 9/11 and Hillsborough.

I have often wondered how just a normal person armed with nothing but foreknowledge of these kind of events could actually do anything to thwart them. Now the notion of just contacting the authorities in place at the time with a kind of "guess what's gonna happen unless you listen to me and act upon what I tell you..." is something I always discount from my strategies .....for the obvious reasons which I hope most will understand.

Anyway, the trick is to time-travel....influence these events for the better, but leave absolutely no trace of your involvement nor draw any attention to yourself in the process. The plan must also be "do-able" based on what is now known of the facts.

I think with the Hillsborough scenario, I'd be looking to influence the redeployment of Brian Mole which resulted in the appointment of David Duckenfield. Mole was redeployed by SYP because of a prank which occurred and he took the rap. If I could just thwart that prank....then.....anyway.....that would be my first punt.

You get the idea?

9/11 is a bit more tricky.....[I'm considering the traditional narrative only here BTW u conspiracy folks ]

Phone in a bomb scare to world trade at 8am ? Would that get both buildings emptied and away from the danger? Mmmmm.....maybe not.

There were a lot of 'moving parts' to 9/11 which would need to be addressed so a lone time traveler would still be severely challenged by the sheer scale of it all and how best to try and thwart it.

You could arm yourself and board one of the planes knowing who you'd need to slot and when....but then...that would just be one plane.....leaving three unaddressed.

[But what the other three then do would probably get you off the hook with what you've just done.....and this breaks the anonymity part somewhat.....]

It's a tricky one....

Since you can make up the rules about fantasy - if I could go back and change things with the knowledge I have now you would have just one shot - and then whether all the incidents changed or not you would have instant amnesia about the future.

Late '82 until summer '84.

'86 - '88.

Late '90 - '91.

Summer to Christmas '99.

2014.

Most important?

The earliest (where everything stems from) and the latest dates.

Would I know? Depending on when it was, I'd make some serious changes; study harder, enjoy my youth more, more time outside less time inside. Plus I'd have life experience to help me out, so I could make certain changes easier, and know more what to expect with others.

It would be a struggle, especially if I suddenly ended up back in school, however it would be no more a struggle then as it is waking up every morning and going to work now.
