Never mind change the wireless key. If I was a TalkTalk customer i would ditch their router fast and get a standard off the shelf model from the like of PC World. IMHO ISP supplied routers are not worth the hassle.

I found out about this attack only 30 mins ago, from inputting a search into Google with results for the last week, but I wish TalkTalk had emailed me as soon as it happened. On the 1st Dec the 3780 internet light went out some time between 05:26 and 12:22 and then I spent 3 days trying to figure out what the hell was going on with my internet connection.
I looked online to see if anyone else had experienced the internet light out problem but only found historical results which weren't helpful, and I didn't think to associate the problem with the router. Instead I checked the WLAN-Auto Config and the Windows Application, Security and System event logs line by line (I normally check and clear the event logs every week anyway) finding nothing, and ran diagnostics on my laptop, also finding nothing, until I realised on the 2nd day that it wasn't the laptop at all. So then I changed all the cables and the microfilter and restarted the damn router several times all to no avail. I still had the internet but it was slow on some sites, and timed out on others, DS Forums was fine. Then on Dec 4th after yet another restart the internet light came on and it all started working speedily again, but my elation was short lived, as 2 mins later the 3780 went bananas. All the lights flashed and then started cycling back and forth before it switched itself off and then back on again and it had lost the network. Then it went into a sulk and would only display a steady red on the power LED. I gave up on it and got the HG533 router and connected that up instead. I set up 2 wi-fi networks with different router passwords, one with the default and one with a new one. All went well with the default for about an hour and then the internet light went out again. I switched to the other network and that's been fine so far, although it just went down again now for 2 mins. Good job I'd copied my post. However my download speed has dropped to between 1 and 4 from 12 to 14 Mbps. My upload speed is about the same as it was before. Now I have visited the TalkTalk Help and found out that I need to reset the 3780 and set up another bloody wi-fi network, that's if my 3780 isn't dead of course. If it is then I'm supposed to contact them for a return and replacement. I had a custom password on the 3780 by the way. Life? Don't talktalk to me about life. |

TalkTalk's handling of the wi-fi password breach is being criticised by several cyber-security experts.

Strangely I've noticed that the internet light on my router has been red very late in the night some nights. It never used to be like this. I've changed the password for the router to see if that stops it from happening.

Two people I know are with TalkTalk and I've suggested that they might care to change their broadband provider when their contracts run out because a) they didn't tell anyone about this (it came out in the media) and b) their "advice" such as it is has been poor and inadequate.
They are just not taking IT security matters seriously. Windows troubleshooting knew something was wrong with the internet connection but couldn't pin it down. I was just about to check the 3780 config when it went ballistic, but I wasn't looking forward to it, I'd been putting it off. Looking back I suppose I should have gone straight to the router as the source of the problem, instead of the system, but I don't know anything about the 3780 because I never took the trouble to learn all about it, I relied on TalkTalk to steer me through the troubled waters of setting up the wi-fi network. I did change the network name (SSID) and set up a custom password on the 3780, but I never learnt how to use the advanced configuration settings or how to monitor the network traffic, or how to configure the ports, and I don't know anything techy about my WLAN home network. When there's a problem, like this cyber attack, if everyone who had one of the affected routers knew how it all worked, then undoubtedly we'd all have been able to fix our routers without TalkTalk's help, and we'd all have been casually contacting TT and saying my router's been attacked and can I have a new one please. But that's not the way it is. So TalkTalk please in future can you tell us? |

They are just not taking IT security matters seriously. Talk Talk also confirmed that some of its customers had been affected, and it was working on a fix. It is not yet known who is responsible for the attack. Earlier in the week, Germany's Deutsche Telekom revealed that up to 900,000 of its customers had lost their internet connection as a result of the attack." "TalkTalk also confirmed that its D-Link DSL-3780 routers were affected but said only a small percentage of its customers used them." About time you stopped defending the undefendable, Talk Talk new about this so they should have told their customers, the same when they was hacked, they never told their customers, not a Talk Talk bashing thread, why are you so worried about them anyway , have you got shares in them? If you are happy with what you get then do not worry, people bash plusnet, i am not bothered, they are a service I use that most of the time is fine, but if people want to bash them makes no odds to me.
You say of other people to get a life, maybe you should. You and others here just take every opportunity to moan and groan about TT and this is a service you don't even use although I think one of your 'mates' does so yes, get a life, mine is good I'm off to Gran Canaria Tuesday for a pre xmas bit of sun...life is good

Same with me and TT. How much harm has come from this attack, what about attacks on the likes of yahoo mail etc (which did have an impact on me)?

Instead I stayed where I was for another year and because of the router hack glad that I did. I will stick up for the ISP I'm with to a certain degree when all has been working well for a good while but I don't tend to jump in at every opportunity to defend it . I don't own any shares, maybe I would behave differently if I did. |

It is not the point of any harm being done, it is just Talk Talk attitude that is the problem, if plusnet done the same thing i would be pretty well annoyed. Plusnet is a service I use that I pay to use, to much money in my opinion, but nothing really any cheaper as they all seem to be tied together, just like the energy companies. plusnet is not perfect, but aso far apart from one major problem, which was solved pretty quickly I have not had any real problems. At the time i went Plusnet it was having to find a provider quickly that offered an ok service at a ok price, out of all the large ones it was the cheapest at the time. Still annoying that it is part of BT, but at least it is run as a separate service and they leave me alone and also do not turn on filters that I do not want, unlike Talk Talk and Sky. Quote:

I know a few people that uses Talk Talk, because they thought it was cheap, but not so cheap these days and they moan about the service and yet stay with them. Slowly they are moving off Talk Talk, the latest one is looking at Vodafone, not so sure myself, but we will see. Maybe this time while you are in Gran Canaria you will stay off here as you seem to be on here even when you are away, now that is sad. If you love Gran Canaria so much, maybe you should stay there. |

Mine does that after a while if there is no ethernet device connected to it, i.e. just wireless mode. Seems to be a power saving feature, red light changes to green when I take my laptop out of standby. Green light stays on if my TalkTalk Youview box is connected.

Gran Canaria There are only so many days a year I can stay there without having to become resident and that brings all sorts of issues so I stay there, go elsewhere too. I've good internet there now so its nice to sit on the patio and fire up my Pro 4 and surf the web or maybe watch a film or TV so not sad at all. The novelty of sitting in a bar all night wears off after a while...being there now is just a (warm) home from home experience You should travel more, broaden your horizons.

The way things are going with Talk Talk they will soon have to pay people to use their service.
Many people considering it will now not make the switch. Many people using it will consider leaving. I wonder if it'll even exist as a service in a few years? |

[quote=neo_wales;84845329]TT can't be beaten as a total package and great connection so I've no problems with them. I will differ about the can't be beaten as a total package to be honest, a lot of providers now to other services, just for a quick comparison I had a look at what plusnet and Talk Talk can offer me if i wanted a few of their services and this is what would suit me if I was doing this. Lets start with Talk Talk. Broadband a line rental, £27 a month, up to 38Mb/s, international calls, i do not really need them, but just to compare 1000mins for £3.75 Then Uk calls on top another £5 unlimited calls Tv is £6 Mobile sim only, £7.25 for 950 mins talk, unlimited text, 2GB of data at the moment and that is a 12 month contract on the phone. comes to £49. Plusnet, broadband £27 a month, for 38Mb/s, International phone £7.50 include uk calls 300 anytime mins to international destination, yep a bit down on the minutes for international destination, but you do get unlimited UK calls with that, so no need for a extra add on. 300 mins would be fine for me. TV, a fiver and it is a pretty good mix of channels, if you watch Tv. Mobile is 2gb data as a promotional thing, 1000 mins of talk, unlimited text 30 day contract £7.50. comes to £47. 50 Price wise it is minimal, maybe connection fees and other costs may change that if you are a new customer or adding a service, like bother Talk Talk and plusnet both charges for their routers and both charge for their TV connection, plusnet is £50 and talk talk is £25 at the moment, but again that is only a promo. So both offers a complete package if that is the sort of thing you want, as does BT,. but no they they will be more expensive again and as do Sky and that is certainly more expensive. But i do not really want a complete package, all i need from an ISP is the ability to get me onto the net, that is it. I use my mobile not my home phone in fact there is not even a phone plugged into the socket, I do have a VoIP phone which i had when i did not have a phone line, whihc I keep because people know the number, like hospital and a couple of people who only seem to phone the home phone, but for phoning out i have not used it. For talking abroad i use skype Tv i have little interest in as you know. The only thing i may be interested in is mobile as i am geting fed up of vodaphone and since Talk Talk uses the vodafone network, I do not think I will be using that, not sure if EE is much better to be honest either. TBH, i am not sure if I am going to stay with Plusnet next year, out of minimum contract, so looking at options, the same with my mobile phone. but if anyone is looking for a complete package then Talk Talk and plusnet more or less offer the same thing, it just depends what provider the prefer to go to. In fact i was thinking this morning about my friend who looking at a PVR, if she is going to up he broadband to fibre next year, then she may be better looking at one of the ones who offer a PVR, the only problem is she is very much like me, do not like to be tied with different services linked to one provider, i learnt my lesson with BT doing that. Talk Talk really need to talk to their customers when things go wrong and not act as if it is nothing, I would be well annoyed with plusnet if they did that and would go elsewhere pretty quick. Quote:
Gran Canaria i have travelled enough in the past, i do not like flying. anyway, there is plenty in this country I have not seen. As for broadening horizons, what horizons are you broadening if you are just sat in the same place in the same room? There are only so many days a year I can stay there without having to become resident and that brings all sorts of issues so I stay there, go elsewhere too. I've good internet there now so its nice to sit on the patio and fire up my Pro 4 and surf the web or maybe watch a film or TV so not sad at all. I am not a bar person to be honest, I have never seen the point in going on holiday and then siting in a pub for hours on end, it is ok for a couple of drinks, but not every night. i am going to get on with my sad life and meet my friend for lunch. |

I had a good discount when I renewed my contract so Large fibre (70+mb/s), Youview PVR, unlimited landline calls UK/International/any UK mobile, sim card, free sim card (OK to bung in a spare phone), Kids TV boost and Entertainment TV boost which gives channels like History, Nat Geo, SyFy and a load of others for just under £50 a month. I use all the services so they can't be beaten on price for me.
That said, I'm only loyal to good service, if TT mess me about I'd move on. |

At the end of the day it depends on what you want and if the package suits you, My Tv viewing is limited, i sometimes go for a couple of days without touching it and when i do I normally watch something on Netflix, I also have now Tv, but stopping that after this month for a while as i really do not bother with it and just a waste of money, but i will keep Netflix. Not sure what is happening mobile or broadband use, broadband is ok to be honest, but I could do with he price being lowered, because at the moment for some reason I am paying more than what is advertised on their webpage and I want to know what I am getting for it, the problem is they will want o stick me into another contract. Mobile is my problem at the moment, vodafone have gone downhill, pretty quick, how they can be voted number one network I have no idea and I am paying more than I would for other networks. I think broadband is over priced in this country anyway, most of it made up of landline rental, no matter how they try to disguise it |

Don't expect it to get any cheaper if landline phones went away. Most of your "line rental" subsidises the broadband component. |

So TT users are 'thick innit' what your trying to say? LOL
UK prices are lower than many parts of Europe, prices in Spain high but that said more and more FTTP/H is being rolled out to the bigger towns and cities with 100-300mb/s available...generally the prices are higher than the UK. |

This is just an update on my earlier Post #27. I couldn't be bothered unboxing the 3780 to reset it and have stuck with the HG533. The download speed is nearly back to what it was with the 3780, 11.56Mbps as I write, and upload at the norm of about 0.86Mbps.
The internet light is still occasionally going out, but for some reason I haven't puzzled out yet, reconnects when I go into router login on 192.168.1.1. without me having to do anything else. I suppose I should test the 3780 to see if it's fried, then at least I can get a replacement from TT and have a spare again. |

There are only so many days a year I can stay there without having to become resident and that brings all sorts of issues so I stay there, go elsewhere too. I've good internet there now so its nice to sit on the patio and fire up my Pro 4 and surf the web or maybe watch a film or TV so not sad at all. The novelty of sitting in a bar all night wears off after a while...being there now is just a (warm) home from home experience
