Grand Tour dark in 4K
Hi all
Looking for some help for what i'm thinking is a complicated issue, but i hope to you its not ![]() I am watching the Grand Tour on Amazon Video using the app on a 4K (non HDR) Samsung Tv (55JU7000). When i watch the standard version it's fine but when i realized that i didn't watch the 4K version i tried to watch again. to my surprise the picture is really dark. I am in standard mode on the TV and have watched 4K on You Tube and other shows on Amazon. Does anyone know why? Strangely the amazon service shows the transmission as being in 4K when i pause video but later it changed to 1080P on the fly Appreciate if anyone could help on this. Cheers Chris |

if you check the Amazon Ts&Cs it does state that quality at a given level is not guaranteed, so my guess is that if you were streaming GT at 4K and Amazon's servers couldn't deliver it it could well drop down to 1080p. I watched the third episode of GT on Sunday. My Amazon box is set to 1080p but a lot of the programme looked decidedly SD to me.

HDMI black level might be set to low (Tv settings)
Gamma? Black tone? I recently did something in the maintenance mode of my Samsung smart Tv - knocked the picture settings off a bit so now I sometimes have to adjust brightness a bit if it's too dark or grey. Later found out the maintenance mode you can easily brick your Tv so I'm staying out of it now... Amazon uses adaptive streaming so will drop to 1080 if your internet slows a bit (i.e. In busy periods like 7-10pm) try it at 3am and it should be solid or use a Ethernet cable |

I don't have 4K (probably going to treat myself to a new TV for Christmas) but I find Amazon streaming in HD to be far less reliable than Netflix or BBC iPlayer.

It's the same on my Samsung - JU6740, also non HDR. Switching to Dynamic sorts the colours for me.
The problem seems to have coincided with a firmware update a couple of weeks back. I notice the stream now flags as HDR - I don't remember the first two doing this. Out of curiosity does your smart remote still work with the Amazon app? |
