Ooops

https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...l-complaint-us

China has lodged “solemn representations” with the US over a call between the president-elect, Donald Trump, and Taiwan’s leader, Tsai Ing-wen.

Trump looked to have sparked a potentially damaging diplomatic row with Beijing on Friday after speaking to the Taiwanese president on the telephone.

The call, first reported by the Taipei Times and confirmed by the Financial Times, is thought to be the first between the leader of the island and a US president or president-elect since ties between the two countries were severed in 1979, at the behest of Beijing.

Geng Shuang, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, said in a statement on Saturday: “It must be pointed out that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing China.”

Uh oh.

After of course phoning the Prime Minister of Pakistan yesterday, saying what a wonderful country it was and how he couldn't wait to visit the place (infuriating India), now has broken a longstanding US-China protocol in being the first president to speak to Taiwan in since 1979.

China are now pissed and wanting to set up a meeting with the Whitehouse immediately.

Well its going to be an interesting 4 years at least whatever it is.
To be fair, one of his few actual manifesto pledges was to stop cheap imports from China. He knows that's going to piss them off anyway, so he wants a different economic powerhouse in that region to be friends with in order to stave off Chinese threats of witholding tech goods etc. during their transition.

I look forward to hearing Trump's plan for dealing with China. He'll have a big plan, the best plan.

If I was an American I would be in favour of this.

He said he would put the USA's interests first in international dealings and he is following through.

The USA has a huge trade surplus with Taiwan they sell them billions of military equipment. They have a huge deficit with China. It is far more in China's interest to maintain good relations with the USA than it is in the USA's. Trump, being a businessman, is well aware of this. Money does the talking and he knows it.

If China, thinks it has the muscle to try and bully the USA (they don't) then let them try it and see how far they get.

because its called diplomacy

china still considers taiwan to be part of china and that has been the official US policy for 40 years

taiwan has just elected a party that wants to push for full independent status, say they do actually push for that now because the US president has recognised them by default

china wont let that happen and take military action, do the US then have to intervene on taiwan's side ?
Yes they do, as they signed an agreement with Taiwan long ago to defend them if China ever attacks. Not sure when that runs out.

And give Joshua Wong a call, then he's completed the set...

According to The Guardian, John Bolton is behind the call. Where Bolton goes, war usually follows. The USA won't go to war with China, but there'll be something bad happening out in Orient soon.

Trump did not do it on his own. The military and CIA must have told him to do it. America wanted to make a U-Turn in politics, and that's why Trump got elected. They needed someone new and fresh to take over, someone willing to execute orders without asking too many questions.
Since when does trump do what he's told?

It seems the call was made from Taiwan to Trump not the other way round as the thread title suggests.

The only provocative thing about this is the idea that China gets to decide who the President should and shouldn't speak to.

The USA - Republic of China (Taiwan) Mutual Defense Treaty ran out in 1979.
Now the USA just has the Taiwan Relations Act that just requires “President and the Congress shall determine, in accordance with constitutional processes, appropriate action by the United States in response to any such danger.”
The USA has no treaty obligation to militarily defend Taiwan.

The art of diplomacy : talking to or saying whatever you like (in the style of a good populist) is all very well but if it ends up angering other countries, then you have a problem on your hands.

So it was fine when the Chinese embarrassed obama infront of the entire world?

I expect that Trump will do quite a bit of provoking during his Presidency. He isn't even going to live in the White House for the first year.

I wonder what the view would be if it had been Mrs Clinton who took the call.

There are diplomatic gaffes all of the time, it's a fine balancing act. Bad diplomacy though would be acting like a bull in a china shop (if you pardon the pun).

I don't think Trump is even trying to be provocative. He clearly has zero interest in foreign affairs or international relations (he barely even mentioned the subject once during his speech the other evening).
