I don't think Trump is even trying to be provocative. He clearly has zero interest in foreign affairs or international relations (he barely even mentioned the subject once during his speech the other evening).
I agree. He does not come across as widely read or having any basic understanding of how his country's government actually works and he is certainly uncollegiate and tactless.

According to The Guardian, John Bolton is behind the call. Where Bolton goes, war usually follows. The USA won't go to war with China, but there'll be something bad happening out in Orient soon.
John Bolton for Secretary of State

For years the West had been quite happy to help China become the worlds workshop and factory, and buy their cheap stuff. Now China is flexing its Communist muscles and playing on Trump's inexperience. This could end very nastily unless cool heads prevail. It would not take much to provoke China-supporting North Korea to attack the South, and then the balloon would go up, and China might well have a go at Taiwan. And if Putin then made a move in the Baltic our tin-pot little forces would be very finely stretched. It doesn't bear thinking about. No more flat-screen tellies from China, or gas and coal from Russia. We would be deep in the dudu. Let's hope Mrs May keeps our lumbering Foreign Secretary out of sight.

oh you still think china is communist

One thing needs to made clear, The USA is capable of fighting and defeating china and russia at the same time. Russia does not have the logistics to fight a prolonged european war and china does not as yet have the will power to directly fight the USA.

Wonder if Trump will get to build a luxury hotel as part of Taiwan's Aerotropolis project.

Probably just as well then that most of our LCD TVs come from Turkey, which won't be affected by Trump's inexperience ... oh, wait.

China doesn't take kindly to being told what to do. And the US no longer has the capability to win a conventional or nuclear confrontation with China.

The aim of US policy is to prevent an invasion of Taiwan by reducing tensions. - because that invasion would now end in success , and /or sinking US carriers.
If America detonated all its nuclear warheads on its own soil we all probably die including everyone in China.

.
I rather think you overestimate the military strength of China and grossly underestimate the military might of the USA.

China's nuclear arsenal and delivery capability is a tiny fraction of the USA's.

On conventional weapons and military budgets, take the worlds military superpowers.

China
Russia
United Kingdom
India
France
Japan
Germany
South Korea
Brazil
Australia
Italy
Iraq
Israel

The USA's military budget is the larger................................................................... of them all added together!!

China's manpower won't exactly cut the mustard against modern sophisticated weaponry.

The USA sends some of its fleet into the waters near to China and Taiwan every two years to conduct exercises, just as a little reminder to China who has the real power.

They will make him pay one way or another

Trump is a very foolish man and he ought to be careful about using twitter to insult other nations.

While he may have a valid point about Taiwan, he is going about it the wrong way.

China will respond by stopping sending iphones to the US. Apple will respond by building a new factory to make stuff in America and promise to pay tax.

It seems the call was made from Taiwan to Trump not the other way round as the thread title suggests.
Wonder if Trump will get to build a luxury hotel as part of Taiwan's Aerotropolis project.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...opment-inquiry

Weeks before President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial phone call with Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, a businesswoman claiming to be associated with his conglomerate made inquiries about a major investment in building luxury hotels as part of the island’s new airport development.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefi...s-pre-arranged

The historic phone call between the President-elect Donald Trump and the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen was prearranged, according to a Taiwanese official.

"Maintaining good relations with the United States is as important as maintaining good relations across the Taiwan Strait," Taiwanese presidential spokesman Alex Huang told NBC News.

For once im on Trumps side, i support Taiwan and think China are way too controlling on issues like this. If Trump intends to stand up to China over the way they bully Taiwan and Hong Kong into submission then i support him on this one issue.
Yes, China can't have it both ways - expect to be treated with full respect when it flagrantly dumps oversubidised steel, etc. onto international markets so causing social and economic disruption and unemployment elsewhere. Responsibility is a two way street.

Good. It's about time somebody stood up to the Chinese.

I hope he takes a similar attitude to the Gulf states too. It's time the "civilised" west washed it's hands of dictatorships and despots around the globe.

Actually there are conflicting reports over who called who;

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/...b017f37fe4bcae

But the Taipei Times reported the call was arranged by Trump’s “Taiwan-friendly campaign staff after his aides briefed him on issues regarding Taiwan and the situation in the Taiwan Strait.”
Given Trumps ability to stretch the truth when it suits him I certainly would take Trumps twitter account with a grain of a salt.

Idk what his stance will be on the gulf.

America is energy independent and trump has said he wishes to pull out simply because they can no longer afford to defend the gulf.

because its called diplomacy

china still considers taiwan to be part of china and that has been the official US policy for 40 years

taiwan has just elected a party that wants to push for full independent status, say they do actually push for that now because the US president has recognised them by default

china wont let that happen and take military action, do the US then have to intervene on taiwan's side
?
This in a nutshell, Trump has just opened a huge can of worms as his new so called bud Putin will have Russia side with China if the shit hits the fan and the USA might find themselves in an impossible position but Trump has zero experience of world politics so this is just the beginning.

Imagine if he came out and said the Falkland Islands are the right of Argentina! don't be surprised if he does.

We were asked. Your comparison only makes sense if Mexico felt threatened and asked the Russians for it.

Trump Organisation 'contacted Taiwan mayor about possible hotel investment'

All North Korea has to do is say they want to open a trump hotel in NK and trump will be on the phone in a flash

He called a dictator a dictator and the people wailed!!!!

Trump getting into a war of words on Twitter with the Chinese in the last few minutes :

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/...38149157969924

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/...39770864693253

This is certainly a novel way to conduct international diplomacy

why would the USA need to do this? Because they talked on the phone?

What goes on between China and Taiwan is their business. It sounds like Taiwan wants to be independent so China will have to accept that unless they want to be aggressive. Meanwhile, Trump wants to trade with both countries with no pathetic 40-year diplomacy red tape getting in the way.
