It depends on (a) how you stopped playback and (b) what you did with the machine before starting to play again.
The feature you're talking about is called 'resume'. The player will remember the point at which you stopped playback if you simply press the stop button. That point then gets stored by the resume memory. The memory is cleared if you then eject the disc or switch off the player or (if fitted) play from another source such as USB memory or streaming features. So resume only works if you stop playback and then come back to it without ejecting/switching off/playing something else from that player. Of course you could always do what most others do and simply use the Skip Chapter ( >>I ) button and then Ffwd ( >> ) to where you last watched. TBH features such as resume tend to be more of a problem than a help. People in general don't read manuals or bother paying attention to the on-screen prompts and so they get confused when a player does something they're not expecting. A lot of tech gets returned as faulty for exactly this reason. If you want to find out any more about your player's features then you should be able to download the full user manual from the Sony support web site.

A quick search reveals you have to hit the play button, not the power button.
For that to work I'm assuming you have to power down the player with the disc in. |

On the Sony DVD players I have you just press stop and eject the disc, replay starts at the point you were at before you stopped and ejected it. They seem to remember the re-starting times for several discs.
