It must be hard for vegetarians like this to function in the world.
I wonder whether, on principle, she doesn't have a computer (contains stearic acid, an animal by product) or drive a car (tyres have stearic acid in) or use soap, fabric conditioner, shampoo or crayons. All of which contain animal by products. Maybe she shuns candles, toothpaste and nail polish - because they contain small amounts of dead animal? Hopefully she looked away on Nov 5th, because fireworks contain stearic acid. Condoms contain casein and glycerin. Animal by products. I think you can get a veggie one. Oh, and if she's sat on a plywood chair, that's meaty too. it's made with blood from slaughterhouses. Some perspective needed I think. |

Would they have to accept 300 1p coins if the bill came to £3?

If you've had a meal and you're due to pay for it then that is money owed.
"In ordinary day to day transactions, the term ‘legal tender’ has very little practical application.". More on another link here. If a goods or services provider wishes to limit their custom by stipulating or barring a particular method of payment before the goods or services are provided, they are legally entitled to do that unless it amounts to unlawful discrimination; there is no suggestion of that in the case under discussion. In other words, the cafe can lawfully do this if specified before the order is placed and accepted.. |

I read the article on the BBC - the way it was worded made it sound like she hadn't even had anyone try to pay with the new £5 note yet. I think it's a petty publicity stunt.

Sounds like a good way to get a free coffee. According to legend* if you proffer 'legal tender' for goods and/or services and your money is declined no further effort to pay needs to be made and you can walk away scot-free.
*I've yet to try this on for size. |

They've seen the reported "controversy" in the papers or on their social media feed and have actively decided to get their knickers in a twist. None of them have a clue how many animal products they come into contact with on a daily basis and, deep down, they don't truly care. But because this particular fact has come to their attention and the media have made a big deal of it, they feel obliged to act as if they care in order to grandstand, "virtue signal" and massage their own egos a little. It's sadly typical of the behaviour of many of the ignorant, immature, self-indulgent overgrown children we have masquerading as adults in today's society. |

The maximum legal tender in 1p coins is 20p. http://www.royalmint.com/aboutus/pol...der-guidelines |

That's my thought too. Whilst I respect her views, I just wonder how many other items in the property may contain traces of animal products.

Apparently, even if you added every one of the new £5 notes together, the total use of animal products would be half an animal.

To be fair, BoE notes aren't legal tender (which is a term relating to the settling of public debts) either.

So Gordie1 and tremol committed an act of theft as no such agreement existed.
Since you left your contact details they should enact legal proceedings. If somebody walked out without paying I would call the police immediately. The fact they think they are in the right would be no lawful excuse for walking out without paying. Although if you left valid contact information it may be only a civil matter in which case I would sue you. No one ever contacted me about it, and I have never returned to the place in question, the other place down the road happily takes my money now. |

http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/bankn...bout/faqs.aspx How quickly will the paper £5 note be replaced by the polymer £5 note? The paper £5 notes are being withdrawn from circulation as the polymer £5 notes are introduced. We expect that by January 2017, more than half the £5 notes in circulation will have been switched for polymer notes. You can continue to use the paper £5 note until its legal tender status is withdrawn on 5 May 2017. |

On a side note I can't stand the new £5 note when I'm on the tills. They are smaller and more slippery and springy so they don't sit well in the till draw like other well behaved notes do.

They shouldn't have used animal fat in the first place. I bet you anything that it wasn't really needed. Also, I don't know why some people find it so hard to understand where vegetarians and vegans are coming from with regards to things like this.

It is tiny amounts of tallow, literally trace amounts in the polymer which is the plastic coating. It is also in a huge number of other plastics, here's a list of examples:

A shop isn't obligated to sell you anything so as long as they charge you before you have eaten anything they can refuse whatever they want but if they let you eat first then they can't refuse the note, well, they can, but they can't have you arrested or anything because you've offered to pay for it.
