You don't think there are alternatives in this day and age?
It is a byproduct that would otherwise go to waste, meaning we would have to manufacture a synthetic tallow for all the plastics, latex etc which would be worse for the environment as it would generate more CO2 and use more energy than using the byproduct already available.

The amounts used in the new £5 are so tiny that to put it into perspective half a cow's worth of tallow was required for all the £5 notes in circulation.

A shop isn't obligated to sell you anything so as long as they charge you before you have eaten anything they can refuse whatever they want but if they let you eat first then they can't refuse the note, well, they can, but they can't have you arrested or anything because you've offered to pay for it.
I'm trying to picture the scene where a copper is summoned to the cafe because a customer insists on paying with the new fiver and the cafe owner is refusing to take it.

I think that the appropriate response would be "sort it out between you, or I'll nick you both for wasting my time."

It would be determined as a civil matter.

They shouldn't have used animal fat in the first place. I bet you anything that it wasn't really needed. Also, I don't know why some people find it so hard to understand where vegetarians and vegans are coming from with regards to things like this.
I thought vegetarians still use animal produce? Why would a vegetarian care about tallow in the fiver, when their lifestyle choice involves the killing of male dairy cows anyway?

I can understand why vegans aren't happy though.

This has to be for publicity, because it is stupid beyond words if serious.

Vegan types can try to avoid stuff containing animal products, but it will be impossible, and to try and make this issue out of the new fiver really is bonkers.

I didn't see anything in the article about this cafe only being vegetarian, so I would imagine it sells stuff like ham, chicken, cheese, eggs and milk. Seems like she doesn't mind handling animals all the time then so it's just a publicity stunt.

In that situation they can't refuse it and what are they going to do? refuse to take them and then spend £35 to take you to court only to be told to stop being numpties and to get out?

Regarding this part of the article:

Ms Meijland said she spoke with staff and they decided they could not justify handling the notes, which came into circulation in September.

"We all said we felt very uneasy about handling it (the note). We thought the only way round this is to just not accept them."

Surely they can't get around handling the new fivers as customers of other shops? What if they pay with cash at the local supermarket and get handed a new fiver in their change? Refuse to take it and demand it all in £1 coins? What if they use a self checkout? (Those things are dispensing new fivers like they're going out of fashion at the moment!)

It just doesn't seem very practical at all.

This place gets mixed reviews. I smell a publicity stunt as well. Imagine if you go in and just get a snack/light meal and all you have is a £20 and pay £11. How many £1 coins does she have? Or are they getting the bank to give them the old £5 notes?

so many people come in wearing shoes and possible clothes made of animal, and they are turned away for a five pound note

My shoes are made of leather so is my belt and watch strap, how would I be received if I went into the cafe. This whole episode has just got silly now.

With the £5 notes if they are changed to suit vegans what happens to those already in circulation, how could the new ones be recognised from the ones that contain animal fat.--a complete redesign? Has anyone considered the huge cost of doing all this. Will my shoes belt and watchstrap be withdrawn and replaced. Oh a nearly forgot my chamois leather I clean the car with.
If the animal fat in these fivers had never been noticed they would have continued in circulation for many years with no ill effects to anyone, the amount of animal fat they contain is minute, like one single grain of sugar in a cake would affect a diabetic.

Must admit their food does look pretty tasty though.

Legally, a business is entitled to accept or reject any form of payment they want. You could pay for your shopping with a bucket of coal if was acceptable to both parties.

Still a publicity stunt though.

The owner's prerogative of course.
Also the customer's prerogative not to visit the café again when they've been inconvenienced by such nonsense.

Does she also inspect people's footwear as they come in?
Her floors can't be contaminated with leather surely.

Only if whatever you're buying is given to you straight away. If its a situation where you get something and pay afterwards they can't.

Cash is a form a payment. There is no sub-distinction between different valid and legal cash tokens such as new fivers or pound coins etc.

That just makes it sound even more stupid. They will be coming into contact with all manner of things animal related,

Isn't it against the law to refuse certain currency? Legal tender and all that?
You can actually refuse to sell somone something however how daft would it be if you are going to ask everyone if they will be using the new five pound note before you served them or how do they deal with a person who wants to pay after the meal which is normally the case in many cafes, restaurant?

Business is tough for independent cafes, shops they cannot afford to start being precious.

My nice new Fivers have been cuddlying up to my Tens and Twenties in my sweaty trouser pockets for days. Nothing so strange as folks.

Probably because they have to touch it and the fat is from a dead animal and not a live one like dairy products. Also, whilst I've been shopping for Christmas I've seen a lot of products that once would have used animal fats, like soaps, that are now vegan. Times are changing, for the better, IMO.

Just seems a bit hypocritical to be making profit from the death of animals in the egg and dairy industry, yet kick up a fuss about the new notes.

The cafe by selling eggs and dairy will be contributing to the deaths of far many more animals than the new notes. Because they're making profit and the killing is indirect, I guess this doesn't matter to them though. Profit before animal welfare.

Did someone try to make her eat the note?

Did her cafe not displace and ruin the livelihoods of any small animals during/:after it's construction?

We're all consumers of nature, whether you're ok with shooting a cow in the face or not, so being so self righteous about it is just ridiculous.
