Hi
I've missed several weeks of corrie lately. Can anyone fill em in on STeve and the medical condition that could affect his babies? I assume all was OK in the end as it's not being talked about now.

Thanks in advance

What is this bloody 'medical condition' anyway? That's all it ever gets called.

The 'medical condition'

It was all clear. It's Corrie, after all.

Steve and Andy's tests both came back clear and it hasn't been mentioned at all since.

I believe I read in a soap mag it is supposed to be myotonic dystrophy. Although I don't know much about it, I still feel like its a badly fitting storyline. Michelle gets into this huge panic over it, meanwhile Jim has apparently lived his whole life with this gene with no realization until now? Steve, Andy and Amy have also lived this long with no effect while possibly having the gene as well? I assume its a storyline of pure convenience thing so that Leanne's baby will have an undeniable link to Steve via this rare gene.

Myotonic dystrophy very commonly doesn't effect people till later in life, it depends on the exact nature of the mutation in the faulty gene inherited. Some people with it only ever get mild cataracts their whole lives (which isn't uncommon anyway so it's not like they're even likely to know it's down to myotonic dystrophy) and only realise they have it when a child of theirs inherits it while others are so severe they're born with it and they're affected so badly they require help all their lives. Just like Huntington's disease where despite being born with the gene it doesn't usually effect until later in life. It does usually get worse down the generations so had Steve inherited it he would have likely suffered more severely than Jim, so the fact that Jim would of only just found out is actually quite realistic.

It was really, was probably only to create more tension between the Characters currently knowing the truth, or at least that's my belief.

It'll probably come back up when it turns out Leanne's baby has "the condition", leading to the one night stand between her and Steve coming out into the open.

Steve was cleared of having the condition so it's impossible that any of his children do, unless the test turns out to be wrong of course and Steve actually has the condition which in reality would be extremely unlikely but in soap anything can happen.

They were very dramatically acting like both Michelle and Leanne's babies would have this horrible disease and their lives would not be worth living. Yet there was a good chance Steve didn't even have the condition and even if he did there was a chance the kids wouldn't have inherited it from him. It has only come to light now as Jim, who's in his 60s, has finally shown signs of having the condition. Jim's managed well over half a century with this condition and not had any problems. It turned out Steve was all clear anyway so it was a big fuss over nothing - just an excuse for Steve to fret his secret was going to be exposed.

The whole thing was ridiculous, no problem whatsoever for Jim, Steve, Andy, even Amy, yet apparently these babies could be sick from the word go and have no quality of life at all.

My bet is still that something will be wrong with Michelle's baby (not related to the above) and needs a transplant of some kind from a sibling, Amy won't be a match which leaves Leanne's child.

There must have been something to it. Jim was a bartender in prison and Steve is a bartender in coronation street. Maybe the baby will grow up to be a brew master.
