I thought it was a complete mess and barely recognisable as a tango. Flashy show dance, fine, but why are we all pretending it was anything to do with ballroom?
maybe because the music wasnt recognisable tango music?

same with the AT and its music

Yes, I think she was handed a poisoned chalice when asked to make a tango out of a disco song, but she created a recognisable, if slightly frenetic, tango. I particularly appreciate her choreographing at least 90% of the dance in hold, unlike some of the other supposedly-ballroom-but-apparently-showdance routines tonight *coughKevincough*
Agreed! She was also the only pro who made the pointless backing dancers work well tonight. I think she's brilliant, and has been all series.

Please do enlighten us as to how you would choreograph a Tango to that music...

It's a Cha Cha Cha, it's about as far removed from a Tango as you can get in the same time signature, but Oti managed to get a load of proper Tango content in nevertheless. She did as good as I think anyone could have done with such unsuitable music.

This particular piece of music didn't seem suitable (too monotonous, not enough variation) but Disco and Tango can be fused - Jason & Kristina did it brilliantly. Plus, Danny appeared not to properly grasp the technique regardless of what he was dancing to.

She is a cut above the rest - puts the likes of Janette and Natalie (this year only) to shame.

She makes ANYTHING work...Danny is truly blessed to have her this year.
more like shes blessed to have Ringah Danny - do you think she would have been this over praised with someone like greg ?

Oti's choreography is usually very good, but she did not make this work at all. It wasn't anything like a tango in terms of feel, technical style or execution. I think there are other pros who could have worked around the appalling music to some extent by using slower, less frantic and more varied choreography.

So I agree that Oti is a great choreographer but not in this instance.

It's why she was given Danny. I know in DWTS, there are faves who are guaranteed to get some kind of talent but for the likes of newer pros to breakthrough and eventual get that fave status, they would "audition" for the season with choreography they had planned for certain dances. I think Oti showed off her brilliant choreography skills preseason and that's why as a rookie (2nd year?) she was given a front runner.

I have rewatched it without the sound on and whilst it is still governed by the music (story line and speed etc) you can see that it is loaded with tango.
I am trying to do a Vulcan mind meld with the producers - please, pretty please with cherries on top - can we have suitable music next year. It ruins our viewing pleasure watching mismatched dances and music. 'We' are the ones this is supposed to be for not an exercise in how obscure they can be.

Not forgetting the other second year boosts. Kevin got Frankie, Aliona got Matt Baker. Then the new professionals who got the "on paper" better celebrities some where it dod not work and others where it did. Karen with Nicky Byrne, Artem with Kara.

Oti has created some outstanding choreography with the very odd music/dance combinations she has had. Lucky she has a partner willing to put in the training time and effort to make it work.

Thank goodness - this is becoming like the Emperor's New Clothes. Oti (like other pros) has done some fab choreos - last week for e.g.. But that tango, even allowing for the odd music, was poor to mediocre. I thought her rumba was too. I like her a lot and Danny is clearly the best dancer and deserves to win but why do we have to pretend she isn't making misjudgments (or that Danny's technique last night in the bits that were tango wasn't horrible?)

I thought there was a reasonable amount of tango there - but maybe lost in the speed (no dance expert me). This year seems to be lacking in traditional waltzes, foxtrots or quicksteps: three theme weeks might not have helped.

But I do think that Oti needs to find a more tender mood in one of her dances next week. There's been a lot of dash and flash, but i would like to see a more romantic, moving Danny if he's to get my votes.

She certainly comes to life on the dance floor. Fit as hell and doesn't half move. That said she is only 26 so should be fit! Studied civil engineering before becoming a professional dancer.

Oti and Danny have it in the bag as far as i'm concerned!

I think Katya also did superb choreography this year. For me, Oti and Katya were the standout pros of this series.
Seconded. But Jo is a close third. Some of her choreography has been really clever and sophisticated. All three have been a huge asset to their celebrities.

Her choreography bores me, tbh. Kevin Clifton's choreography leaves her - and everyone else - in the shadows.

I don't think anyone's pretending Danny danced it that well, but to say it wasn't a Tango implies there wasn't much Tango content, when there clearly was. That's a separate question entirely as to how well he danced it and how much of a problem the music speed, theming and general lack of suitability caused.

I've found nearly every dance she's choreographed this season wonderfully memorable. Can't say the same for Kevin this series.

I don't think it is separate question at all. If Danny couldn't dance it well then that may be because the choreography wasn't appropriate for someone of his experience.

I think that when people say it wasn't a tango they are not talking about the amount of content. The issue is the nature of the content I.e. How it was put together and whether ir allowed Danny to demonstrate some of the typical qualities you would expect to see in a Tango. If the choreography is too frantic because the emphasis all on quicker timing then it is difficult to do so. Tango is not a frantic dance.

I think Oti is very good.

However she throws too much at everything, she just can't leave things be - using that silly red tie, case in point.

It's always flashy and a little OTT, and I don't think she's actually the cleverest choreographer - more, 'if he can do it, put it in'. Although we haven't, perhaps, seen enough to judge completely.

Katya had a lot to deal with and doggedly taught Balls to dance, I admire her very much.

But Jo is a subtle, clever and beautiful choreographer, she's massively impressed me this season - the Paso to incredibly awkward music is a case in point. She has depth and drama.

And Kevin is excellent.

Oh dear, you two are not going to make yourselves popular by bringing informed eyes to the proceedings. I hated their tango. I can't say why aside from it was too fast, I could hardly see what was happening and the whole framing did not suit a tango. This last criticism is of production rather than Oti.
