Will walking has ruined the chances of a 4 person final. But there is a way they can do it and that is by letting everyone from next week go on to the final without an elimination.

They did it back in 2008.
who me?

I hope they do.

They won't do that again. They like their eliminations too much.

No they won't do it again. The reason it happened once was because they realised that the public vote couldn't save one of the semi finalists and that was unfair to the public. They didn't realise until after the lines were closed and the result announced., so they had to let the losing semi finalist go through to the final.

They have had nearly the entire series to make adjustments for WIll's departurre in terms of broadcast time. I also suspect that they have a contingency plan even before the series starts to handle an unavoidable 'retirement' mid competition.

If you give me a good reason for having 4 people in the final in the first place then that might be an option, but there isn't one.

2 or 3 person finals were the norm for years on Strictly and usually absolutely brilliant, so I for one am ecstatic there will only be 3 finalists this year!

I agree, they wont do it this year.

From the advance schedule, it is clear that they are already planning for a 3 person final, with having just the one show, with no breaks, on Finals night.

Len was a guest on Chris Evans on Friday on Radio 2

Len confirmed it's a three person final.

It appears they will still end up with a winner & 2 runner ups though. As there is a single show with no break where one couple is eliminated.

Just wish there was the clear 1st, 2nd and 3rd as in the early years.

Me too. I find it odd ( polite word ! ) that we know the placing of every single contestant, right up to 4th place .........but are no longer allowed to know who came 3rd and 2nd.

Not going to happen.

Hello - I am sorry - I just don't understand the BIB, could you explain the scenario please?

thank you

Would make the semi final meaningless, wont happen. A 3 couple final will be fine.

There was a tie at the top of the board with only 3 people and at that time they scored those below the tie differently so the board was

Lisa 3
Rachel 3
Tom 1

Even if he topped the vote, Tom could only score 4 and, as one of the girls would have to score 5 overall, there was no way he could escape the dance off. They didn't realise until they had opened the voting, so in the end they had to let everyone through to the final because people's votes for Tom would have been worthless otherwise. That is why people below a tie are now only scored one point less.

The only reason there's a 4 person final is those couple of years when someone had to drop out and they ended up with a 2 person final which wasn't ideal - each couple did way too many dances and the quality suffered.

4 or 3 people works fine.

The first year they had 5 couples still in the week before finals, there was a double elimination.

The following year for some odd reason they went for a 4 couple final. Suspicions relate to how poor one person expected to make the final was doing in public votes.

3 finalists is just right and is the norm in most things

There was always going to be someone like that. Without elimination it would make for a rather anticlimactic episode, too. But I can see them cancelling the first elimination in the final.

I totally agree, I can see no good reason for us not knowing 2nd/3rd. In the olden days (!), in a 3-way final, it went like this:

1. All three couples dance their repeated dances (always used to be their best-scoring latin and ballroom, but that was before a) there were so many extra genres and b) the producers decided they wanted to choose the dances.
2. Voting started, there was some filler, (usually each of the eliminated dancers returning and doing a 30-second twirl), then the votes were frozen.
3. Third place was announced, that couple said their goodbyes and then danced their showdance.
4. Voting re-opened then the final two did their showdances.
5. Voting closed and after some more filler the winners were announced.

I always preferred it when the showdances were last - finishing on a repeated dance always feels a real anti-climax - but so many dances feel like showdances these days that <shrug>. I also don't like it when one couple doesn't get to do their final dance. (Especially when it means we didn't get to see Sophie's Charleston again, for example), so I really hope they keep that sort of format.

So, hopefully, all do two dances, 3rd announced, 3rd does their final dance, then remaining two do their final dance.

But this is SCD producers we're talking about here, so who knows.

Edited to add, after seeing previous post, I can see them not doing the in-final elimination.

Though if they do do that I wonder if it means the show dances will be danced last again? The one thing I've hated from the last few series is the show dance being performed second rather than rounding off the show.

Just go through to the Dance Off next weekend then, provided neither make any serious errors, just say that both were so good that the judges cannot decide and both going through to the final. Masterchef seem to do it in every series at least once in the heats.

Masterchef still whittles them down before the final weeks and as it is recorded with no public voting they can fit things in how they like.

There is always an elimination with Strictly bar one year.

It's funny, I prefer them to dance a favourite dance last because you know it's going to be of quality.

With show dances there are maybe two that are actually any good, they are messy, sometimes misjudged and rarely show the celeb in their best light. At least a good dance of theirs will be one of their very best.

Masterchef has zero input from viewers. In SCD they could always fall back on the public vote. And then there's Len's casting vote, unless they all refuse to do their job and get a sack, the decision will always be made. And there's a precedent now when the contestants can't dance in the DO, too.
