My 16 and a half year old collie who has a failing liver and kidneys (but who is amazingly perky) came down with a UTI a few weeks back. The vet prescribed a week of Notoclav antibiotic. Fine but the infection came back 3 days after the course ended. Ditto after a second week though the good news was that this time there was less protein and no blood at all in the urine sample. No crystals either. So we are now on a 2 week course. Fingers crossed.
I know her chronic conditions can make a dog predisposed to urine infection. However she is otherwise well and there is no sign of an actual kidney infection. Other underlying causes can include bladder stones or a tumor.
If the infection persists we will have to do more tests including a full urine culture to see if she needs to be on a different antibiotic. However anything invasive is out. I have heard of some dogs having to be on a permanent low nightly antibiotic dose.
Just wondered if anyone else had had a dog with a chronic UTI.
PS with the vet's agreement I am also now supplementing with cranberry and d mannose and giving probiotics inbetween the antibiotic doses.
