It would depend on what rights, if any, BT Sport get during the UK domestic summer. I expect he will take a break from Radio 1 next winter, especially if he anchors the Ashes from Australia.

I think his R1 show has always been much of a muchness. The fact that he is considered as one of the top talents on that station says a lot about the dearth of young talent in radio.

Having said that, I think R1 will want at least another 5 years out of him. He's only 30 and it's not as if there's anyone half decent waiting to replace him on drive. How many presenters do R1 even have now who are under 30??

I don't get the big deal about him really. He's obviously a golden boy at the BBC at the moment

I think if he were to get breakfast he would have got it by now. He's not dissimilar in age to Grimshaw so by the time they decide Grimmy is too old Greg will be too old too.

Sounds like OP doesn't know the BT Cricket rights... They only have Australian cricket rights so all the presentation is from London for set small periods throughout the year while he can dual that with R1.

Only thing is the Ashes series in Oz next winter. Which is the ONLY trip James will do so 4-6 weeks over a 4 year cycle.

Same could have been said of Chris Moyles vs. Sara Cox, but Moyles went on to do the show for over eight years.

Scott Mills is more at risk of being moved to R2.

Andy Peebles also did Music and Cricket,

Didnt Terry Wogan have an innuendo-laden feature for years, or am I thinking of someone else on the R2 network?

While I don't disagree with anything you've written generally, for a five Test match series you are looking at 7-8 weeks accounting for at least a couple of rest weeks between some of the Tests.

If Greg James does head to Australia for the England Test series and then was to stick around for the limited overs matches (I suspect Alison Mitchell might host these if they are doing on-site presentation), that'd be an extra month or so (there are 5 ODIs and 3 T20 internationals next winter).

In total, the Ashes series will last for three months, between November 2017 and January 2018, so Greg will be off the Radio 1 airwaves for a considerable period of time if he does travel to Australia for it.

Greg's young enough he's still got a few years of music radio in him yet if he wants it. He's one of the few current R1 jocks I can see moving across fairly seamlessly to 6 Music if his R1 slots are needed for new blood. And TMS is, as years go by, liable to come to need new voices to understudy and in time replace the current linkmen, so a Colin Murray-style shunt to 5 Live is not impossible...

Wouldn't surprise me with close-ish affiliation that Greg rocks up doing his Radio 1 show from an ABC studio.
