Cats had lhad to have front leg amputated
Hi all
Our ten yrar old moggy Felix has been injured and had to have his left front leg amputated. The op was two weeks ago and is healing well but wants to go out. What do people think? Im worried he'll fall and get into trouble again. Hubby thinks we should let him go out. Felix is mostly still quite lethargic at the moment and only asks to be let out for a short while before giving in and using the litter tray but Ithink he'll get more demanding as he recovers. Also any other experiences of three legged cats? |

Personally I'd wait a while. I've met a few 3 legged cats & they were fine.

I wouldn't let him wander too far. Can you 'cat proof' your garden or provide him with an enclosed run? With only 3 legs he won't be able to get away from dogs or unfriendly cats.
Maybe take him for walks in a harness? |

Also any other experiences of three legged cats? We had a cat who had to have his left back leg amputated after being run over by a car. He was one year old at the time - he lived for another 11 years and was as agile as any of my other cats. He could climb up walls/fences/jump and run like the wind, although his gait was always a little awkward looking - he adapted very, very well - as do most cats. |

I've got a dog that had a front leg amputated, no cat experience but I wouldn't let your cat out yet. It's still early days and there will be lots of deep healing going on so I wouldn't want to take the risk of him knocking it. What about trying a lead and harness? One of my neighbours bought one as when he took his dog for a walk the cat always followed but he was afraid it would get lost or run into the road.
Hope he continues to do well x |

Thanks for your tips and good wishes.
The vet said two weeks but we're not letting him out yet, although he does seem bit livelier the last day or so. |
