In the case of Richmond, there was also the possible opportunity of a high profile returning MP having a Portillo moment, and no-one wants to miss that.

Is this the momentum moment where Tories against Brexit can join with Labour voters against Brexit and move as one to the Libdems? It's not beyond the bounds and could be who is in coalition with the Tories in 2020, Libdems or UKIP. Hopefully UKIP won't have more than a handful of seats (if any) and the Libdems can have another "2010" - but would the Tories try to go it alone in a minority government in a flegling Brexit?
Or will there be an SNP/Libdem/Labour coalition??

Wonder if May secretly wants to go to the country this spring?

Coming third and increasing their vote share is impressive for the Libdems. Although I feel that we may need a by-election in a Tory/Libdem marginal to see if the Libdems can continue to bounce back, a South West marginal could be an ideal indicator.

Kidspud has obviously forgotten that the Phillips' resignation story receive plenty of media coverage at the time.

As each year goes by my respect for the electorate falls a little bit more. I'm not saying that on a partisan basis - more that they are usually illogical and extremely fickle.

There's people out there that voted for the LIb Dems in 2010 when they're to the left of Labour, and then switched to UKIP. Those that gave the Lib Dems a kicking in 2015 for being in coalition but now abandon Labour to give them their support even though they are exactly the same party with exactly the same policies and a leader who is proud of their coalition record. Voters in Richmond were Lib Dems until a pro-Green independentish Tory came along; but then when he stands as an actual Independent on a Green issue he gets beat.

I have literally no idea what some of these people actually want. They treat politics like it's an episode of I'm a Celebrity where you punish the vain and support the underdogs.

Caroline Johnson: (Conservatives) - 17,570
Victoria Ayling: (UKIP) - 4,426
Ross Pepper: (Liberal Democrats) - 3,606
Jim Clarke: (Labour) - 3,363
Marianne Overton: (Lincolnshire Independent) - 2,892
Sarah Stock: (Independent) - 462
The Iconic Arty-Pole: (Monster Raving Loony Party) - 200
Paul Coyne: (Independent) - 186
Mark Suffield: (Independent) - 74
David Bishop: (Bus Pass Elvis Party) - 55
”

That shows that Libdems and Labour came fourth and fifth behind the combined votes of the independents and the nutters.

By that logic, UKIP came last by a long way if you combine every other vote.
In other words, you made an absurdly laughable point.

And by your logic, Conservatives scraped home by a couple of thousand votes.

Exactly, I was showing what a stupid point it was to make if you add lots of different votes together, to claim someone was in a different place from the actual result.

It was during This Week Neth.

As the Tories were expecting to hold the seat, it didn't garner the same interest as Richmond. I didn't even sit up to see the result. I did for Richmond. (well done Lib Rems. A nice Remain win there).

No. Only just over half the country wants Brexit. The debate now is what sort of Brexit. Soft? Hard? Red, White and Blue? Extreme?

Oh dear. Were the Tories predicted to hold it? Yes they were. The Beeb gets a tiny, tiny, tiny amount from the EU. Nowt to speak of.

The BBC, like all organisations, has a limited budget. In the case of the BBC, a shrinking budget. Would you expect the BBC to fund LiVE coverage of a fairly predictable by-election at 3.30/4.00am when most people are in bed asleep? I wouldn't. The BBC made the right call. In short, it was an 'as you were' kind of By with the only story being the fall in the Labour vote and the resurgence of The Dems.

The Look North political commentator was at the count for Sleaford, so they must have put some sort of money up and the whole media was in a tizzy about the incumbent resigning.

No-one expected an upset in the by-election, however. Tories Win Safe Seat is not news; Richmond was, because of the attempts to secure the seat for Goldsmith, and the sense that an upset was in the offing.

Indeed, the LibDems are already increasing their support among Remain voters and people apprehensive about the risk of a Hard Brexit. The Tories are in the process of implementing Brexit as promised, UKIP believe uncompromisingly in Brexit but Labour have little to stand for these days.
