Loads of people on music forums seemingly putting bets on Mariah now. Also another charity song by Friends Of Jo Cox is a real contender. Still think it'll be the hospice charity myself.

As Greg Lake has now passed away, his song should be promoted as a tribute.

yes, if there was any justice or sense to the singles chart these days I Believe in Father Christmas should be the 2017 Xmas number one.

Already at 47 on I-tunes so could be a Top 40 entry next week but may miss out due to streaming. Can't see many young 'uns streaming it as it's not as well known as Mariah, Pogues and Wham etc.

Zayn & Taylor Swift out of nowhere are number one on itunes with 'I don't want to live forever ' from the new fifty shades movie.

Mariah's Christmas classic at No.9 in today's first mids and a lot on music forums think she may do it this year.
Now at number six in this week's chart.

Surely a contender

It's definitely unpredictable.

As Thorney has posted, ZAYN & Taylor Swift have released their single taken from the new Fifty Shades Darker film. If Taylor allows this song to be added to Spotify next Friday, that could provide some big competition for the #1 spot.

The X Factor winner really does depend on who wins, and what the winner's single sounds like. If the song is another funeral sludge like last years' Forever Young then it's got no chance.

There are two charity singles that are generation attention so if the news/media latch onto one of these then that could seal the deal for Christmas #1.

Mariah Carey is #6 two weeks before the Christmas chart. The highest the song has gone in the UK charts since December 2007 when downloads took over from physical CD singles as the new method of purchasing music.

Little Mix perform their new single on The X Factor on Sunday so that might get a big boost and is more likely to still be riding high in two weeks time.

Cruz Beckham!!!

Her vocals ruin the song

She is on The X Factor this weekend, so her song could get a boost.

Well, Alicia Keys performed on The X Factor a few weeks ago and her single barely had any significant boost on iTunes or Spotify.

I suspect the same will happen with Kylie. I doubt it'll go top 40. Spotify will ensure that, unless it's Kylie's cover of Santa Baby.

The interest in who will be xmas number 1 doesn't seem to be a big deal anymore like it once was.
This. I remember the excitement in the 80's and the 90's over what was going to get to number one over Christmas.

I even kept an interest going into the 00's until The Darkness's Christmas offering was beaten to the top spot by Gary Jules's utterly depressing dirge of a version of Mad World.

I remember being furious with the record buying public for making this miserable gloomy depressing song the Christmas number one.
I remember thinking"'what will Jules be back with next year, a version of 'Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas' called 'I've decided to slash my wrists this Christmas"??

That song was just too dark and depressing for Christmas and people went for that one. After that, I was done with it.

Still can't forgive Gary Jules.

I really like The Living Years by Mike & The Mechanics and it's one of the most heartfelt songs from the late 80s.
This is one of the songs I just can't listen too. The year it was in the charts was the year my Dad died suddenly at Christmas.

Now because I never really got on with him, the lyrics are uncomfortable listening. If its on in a shop, I have to put down my prospective purchases and leave the shop until its over.

It's nice to meet someone online who shares such a random and strong opinion with oneself.

For the first time in a long time, we had a proper Christmas song to get behind (not just some trite tat added to a pop star's single list), and people didn't buy it!

I liked the version of Mad World well enough, but now you never get Don't Let the Bells End on Christmas CDs, which you would if it had been no 1. Grr.

Depressing dirge? It is one of the best Christmas No.1's of all time. It is certainly less depressing than Renee and Renato and Mr. Blobby.

What? Most Christmas songs didn't get to No.1 and The Darkness track features on many Christmas compilations.

Yes it does. I have it on at least two bought in the last few years. Don't think it's been on Now Christmas though.
Never liked it though. Glad it didn't make No.1.

Not any that I've found, and believe me, I spend way too much time looking for the right mix

I think it would be more of a cert if it didn't reach no. 1.

Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce this years Christmas #1.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-38293156

As soon as I read that the VAT from all sales of the single will be donated to the Jo Cox Foundation, I instantly thought "well, this is the Christmas #1".

I can see this selling similarly to The Justice Collective next week. Good Morning Britain will be backing this single, plus it's going to get widespread media attention purely because of the horrific attack that took place in the summer.

Sorry Cowell, you can throw as much Louis Tomlinson and Matt Terry as you want at the public, but ultimately you ain't getting that Christmas #1 this year.

And has I already said most Christmas songs didn't reach no.1. Some songs that regularly feature on Christmas compilations didn't even make the Top 40!

You're probably right. Nice to have a Stones track back at No.1 too after their No.1 album last week.
