This mornings shipping forecast.

Fast forward to 9 minutes, which is when he starts to lose it.

Half a minute later, and he appears to depart in a hurry!

I'm impressed with how cooly the continuity announcer took over and finished off the shipping forecast, read the news, and then went on to read the weather, without missing a beat!

Why is it always him, he is a liability.

It made me feel very uneasy. He seemed to be speeding up the reading of the forecast to get it finished, paused once, but couldn't make it to the end. Chris Aldridge, the newsreader, was a real pro, especially if Tom puked in the studio. I imagine he was sitting just next to Chris as the continuity was flawless...
Wonder what he ate in the BBC canteen?
Apparently he's OK now

I know people all knew who were listening that Tomasz was being sick, but there was no mention on air that was what had happened, just a smooth continuation of the forecast by the newsreader, unless someone mentioned later that Tomasz was fine?

He posted on Twitter a couple of hour later that he had an attack of sea-sickness during the shipping forecast.

You could say he's had a very interesting broadcasting career over the past couple of years !

I can remember him having a fit of the giggles whilst reading the shipping forecast, although on that occasion he did recover and finish the forecast!

He's a human being- human beings get ill. Sadly tis the season for winter vomiting bugs.

Obviously if it was alcohol induced any sympathy evaporates instantly, but otherwise it's just one of those things- things like this happen in any workplace, why would the BBC be any different.

Or what he drank on Saturday night.

No, he's a liability.

"I had sea sickness during the shipping forecast" on Twitter, because it's funny isn't it.

Giggling like a teenage girl through another shipping forecast.

Sticking your middle finger up at a presenter live on air at breakfast time.

If you listened to how professionally the continuity announcer continued with the forecast you see how childish and how much of a liability Shaffernaker is.

I'm inclined to agree. Quite how he managed to worm his way back after getting removed for sticking his middle finger up on national television is anyone's guess!

Wouldn't the weather presenters at that time of day have worked through the night?

Yes.

Normally the 5.20 Shipping forecast is their last forecast before someone else comes in for the first forecast on 'Today' just after 6.

And- If someone said to you 'One of the weather forecasters was sick on air' but didn't say who, you would just know it would be Schaffernaker and none of the others, because it is ALWAYS him. He has had more mishaps than the other 12 (or however many there are) put together.

I don't disagree that he has more mishaps.

On the other hand, he's pretty charismatic and entertaining. Weather forecasts are in essence purely information but if delivered in a monotone drab way, can be quite boring. I'm not saying go anywhere near as far as Live TV back in the day, but apart from the finger incident a few years ago, so what if he's a bit of a cheeky chap?

I seem to recall Andrew Cotter had a similar incident when commentating on the Six Nations rugby a couple of years back, which left Jonathan Davies commentating for the whole of the first half.

Luckily S4C's Huw Llewelyn Davies was on hand to take over for the second half.

There was also a BBC East Midlands breakfast opt out where the presenter was taken ill on air - fortunately off camera, but not off mic.....

Those of you in Central land might remember Arati Hali having a coughing fit during a GMTV opt years ago!

People sometimes become ill through no fault of their own. I have no evidence over whether he was at some all night party and rolled into the BBC at 5am, or whether (as seems more likely) he was either at the end of a night shift where he was feeling a little under the weather, or had to wake up at some extraordinarily horrible hour to come in and do that shift. Either way, he's feeling ill so he's a liability feels like a bit of a jump.

I like Tomasz. I like the fact that presenters with a little bit of quirkiness and personality are given a chance in the BBC. I like the fact they'll sometimes screw up, sometimes spectacularly. You know why? Because God knows there are a million other worse things going on in the world than a weatherman making an unfortunate gesture as a camera cuts to him at exactly the wrong moment, or feels a little ill at an ungodly hour.

He's not a liability he's a human and clearly has a sense of humour which is something may people on here don't seem to have.

Do you actually know why he was sick? If the answer is no then I suggest you reserve judgment. I'm sure many people have been ill while they're broadcasting. I once did a show with what later turned out to be food poisoning and while I didn't puke on air or shit myself in the studio I did have to dash to the toilet several times during the 2 hour show. Obviously on Radio 4 you don't have the luxury of sticking a long song on to cover it.

I don't consider this to be the best show I've ever done but I'd hardly say I was a liability.

I agree that having a bit of a personality really shouldn't prevent you being a broadcaster.
Radio 4 is at its best when it isn't completely po faced.

Charlotte Green's sense of humour shone through occasionally and made for some really funny moments.

Tomasz does usually present the forecasts in a professional way, and being taken ill doesn't mean that he is at fault.

Did you ever stick your middle finger up on national television?

No but if I ever get on national tv I might.

I didn't see that but was it the tv equivilant of swearing without realising you're live on air.
