Another interesting side to this debate is the meat eaters who have a go at making say shepherds pie using a soya product, and then tell me (a vegetarian) in a kinda patronising way that it was 'quite good' - as if I'm supposed to be impressed.
One thing that might sway this discussion is how the meat trade is becoming increasingly halal - to supply burger + pizza jonts, schools etc. It's a million miles from 'humane slaughter' and is currently the butchers' dirty little secret. |

TBH as a vegetarian I have no problem at all with other people eating meat. What does upset me, though, and it's something that upsets a lot of meat-eaters I now as well, is the amount of meat that is wasted. I can understand the argument for killing animals to eat. But I can't see any ethical justification whatsoever in kill animals just so supermarket shelves can be full. Killing animals for food is one thing- but it's not food unless anyone's eating it. Killing animals just to turn them into a commodity has far less justification.

I actually think the 'is it natural?' debate is wrong on both sides. Evolutionary speaking, just from anatomy alone, clearly we evolved to this stage because of it.
However, it was never to the amount of consumption it is now. The argument that we were "meant" to eat meat (that word "meant" is already problematic in talking of evolution) doesn't mean we were "meant" to gauge on it to the amount we are now. Evolutionary speaking, we didn't have supermarkets or drive-throughs. |

If a Vegan hasn't told you they're a Vegan within 3 minutes of starting a conversation with them, they're not a vegan.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They can be dangerous people. There was one at my niece's primary school - a teacher- who petrified the kids with her preaching about cruelty to animals. Several children started to refuse to eat meat all of a sudden. Fast forward a few years and at least three of the children were anorexic, my niece included. What made her think she could use her access to other people's children as a platform for her kranky ideas? The answer was her sense of moral superiority combined with a total lack of scruples. |

Vegans have the empathy to understand that animals experience fear, pain and the instinct to live just like we do.
In fact, some experience things even more intensely than humans. Female cows have extremely strong bonds with their young. Humans are brainwashed from a young age to believe we should drink calf milk and consume the flesh of other beings. It is difficult to break out of these mental bonds, especially when peer pressure encourages you to go along with the majority. You need to appreciate that vegans want everyone to understand the agony of millions of animals going on right now. Something that could be prevented if people were more aware and educated. I appreciate that some will insist on saying we are a meat-eating species and have the right to do what we want at the top of the food chain. If they are also comfortable about the environmental damage caused by the meat industry, they should stand by their beliefs and try not to be affected by others expressing a different opinion. Remain calm and you can always block / silence people on facebook, I have done it myself while still remaining friends with them. I'll say no more as I always get accused of being a Vegan Nazi. And you know what? If that's the case then I am proud of it. (However, in response to the post a little further down about pesticides. All the vegans/vegetarians I know object vociferously to their use - because they do kill the insects - and every living thing is part of nature's cycle and therefore important in its own way. Even us, the most arrogant species on the planet - which we are also doing our best to destroy. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure that Nature would actually miss us if we weren't around. Certainly there would be many more species around because we have made umpteen of them extinct. There's something to be proud of. Not). And I said I wouldn't say any more. Guess I can't help it. |

That was where it all started - a stupid self righteous young woman who passed on her hang ups to young children.
Not wanting to eat meat, doesn't stop someone wanting to eat at all or having opinions on their body shape, size and weight. So, what do you see as the correlation between not wanting to eat meat and this eating disorder which followed for these children? |

Re the veggie black pudding - I prefer it to the "real" thing. I'm not a veggie any more, but no way would I eat anything made of blood!

Wasn't there a veggie/vegan bashing thread not long ago? One where someone seemed to take personal offence at the fact that I'm veggie and even started some childish name calling?

I don't eat red meat or drink cows milk any more and I can't say I miss it. A couple of people have looked at me strange for not eating red meat but it's my choice. I tell them it's for health reasons and because I don't like the look of it. I find red meat repulsive to even look at. I don't get the fascination with bacon either. Why are people so obsessed with it? I do eat it sometimes but not too often because of the high salt and nitrates in it.

None of my family, friends or acquaintances are vegetarian and yet not once has anyone questioned my choice. In fact people go out of their way to make sure they cater for me even though I tell them never to bother. It's nothing to do with meat eaters versus vegetarians . It's about decent people versus ignoramuses. |

So she told them the truth, as opposed to glossing over it like a lot of parents do? If they got terrified by the truth then who are you to say that it isn't terrifying.
