I remember being told that the BBC nations no longer take a sustaining feed from London and that they play out all the programmes from their own servers.

I wonder if the unfortunate death of Andrew Sachs has highlighted a weakness in this system as the tribute showing of Fawlty Towers wasn't shown until the day after at 17:25.

Could this be because they would not have had the programme on their servers at such short notice?

Are they still able to opt in to London if need be?

London also wouldn't have had the programme that night.

How else would they get the news and other live broadcasts?

I don't know what is normally on at 19.30 on a Friday in England, Wales or NI, (I know I could Google it but I can't be arsed), but I assumed that BBC Scotland decided to stay with the scheduled programme (Landward), and show Fawlty Towers the next day.

Tony Currie will know the answer to this!

He certainly will.

I'm sure the nations have direct access to the 'on line' London playout servers, so can play out anything they wish timeshifted by one second, or a week, or even before London/England have shown it.

Ahhh right, so they actually have direct access to the London servers and don't have their own copies then.

I remember them showing a drama series set in Scotland not too long ago that was shown a day earlier than everybody else!

Good point, they must be able to take the sustaining feed.

Just taken a look and the schedule says that they did indeed show Landward.

Never heard of this programme, maybe they wanted to show it if it's actually a locally produced programme??

Because Scotland was showing Fawlty Towers a day later, it looks like they had to drop the scheduled repeat of Celebrity Mastermind.

It's a sort of Scottish version of Countryfile. It is repeated on Sunday anyway so could have easily been dropped.

No doubt there was a good reason why they didn't drop Landward as they would have to explain to London

BBC Two Wales uses the main BBC 2 network feed in the morning and late night (if they haven't opted out/added in extra programming) and will join things like Snooker Extra 'in progress' so they must have access to the sustaining network.

Landward predates Countryfile by over 10 years. A 40th anniversary Landward was shown a few months ago.

I enjoyed watching Fawlty Towers on Saturday. Was on at a good time IMO.

L
They might. There are two ways, record in real time a playout from the London server on to theirs ( either 'as broadcast' or by them firing off a session themselves) or get the file via an ftp transfer

it was the one with ''the hearing aid lady'', andrew sachs appears only very briefly, probably the least suitable episode they could have shown ........

It contained his most often quoted line "I know nothing".

A friend in the US mentioned that line when I told him about the death, he said he uses it almost every week!

He had a few scenes, including the C K Watt one with the deaf lady and a whole scene where Basil tries to explain about the horse

Communication Problems! I love that episode That's the one with CK Watt and Mrs Richards with her hearing aid complaining about the view of Torquay - from a Torquay hotel bedroom window!

The nations get a 'clean feed' of the 2 networks, that is the programmes without the junctions and free from credit squeezes, voice overs etc. The gaps are filled with a spinning bbc logo graphic, which has been seen on air occasionally!

Of course they still have the network output to go to out of hours or when needed during the day

Nations don't acquire copies of all the programmes because it simply isn't necessary - where the programme is the same as in England, we simply take a clean feed of the playout from London. However we can acquire programmes whenever we need our own copies, and these are played directly from our own servers.

I'm afraid I'm not in a position to comment on scheduling of programmes.

Thanks for all the information everyone.

I find the schedule changes by the Nations to be very useful for my TiVo Tony.

Since BBC1 +1 was vetoed by the BBC Trust, it's often the only opportunity for time shift recording!

One of the best visuals in Communication Problems is when Mrs Richards complains about the lack of loo paper, Polly tells Manuel to get some loo paper for room 22 and a few minutes later in the background you see him staggering up the stairs trying to jugle 22 loo rolls!
