I thought Elaine sounded very strange and was off key through much of it.

Has she had some issues with her voice?

When she first sang this song (many years ago), she had a wonderful voice and could hold a note.

Tonight she talked most of the song rather than sang and her voice broke so many times it was embarrassing.

I loved listening to her when she was younger but it is so sad when aging stars try to make a come back and fail. It's like an Olympic athlete trying to make a comeback 20 years later.
Petula Clark managed it

I was looking forward to her tonight but the vocal was a bit dodgy. She seemed to start in too high a key and never really recovered. Shame.

Yes, I remember her most for that 'I know him so well' duet, but she was truly bad tonight. What a shame.

Like many other singers she has continued to perform too long, suffering by comparison with her earlier years.

That said she was brilliant compared with many others that have been wheeled out on SCD over the years - Boy George, Rod Stewart, Tony Bennett, and that wheezy bloke who was on a couple of weeks back, to name but a few.

Shame, she didn't sing it like she used to, but of course she is much older now if that has anything to do with it.

This song used to give me goose bumps, not tonight though.

I've never liked her voice (singing or talking) as it is far too nasally. I don't sing, but I always thought a good singer should sing from the diaphragm not through the nose, which is a very ugly sound.

Even so, Elaine hit an all time low tonight. Easy to excuse her off key notes, and talking, as "acting" the part, but, no it wasn't, it was just bad.

I think people are being tad unkind. She is older and adapted the song. I am much much younger than her and cant sing as well as her. I liked the way she spoke in some parts. Having said that I prefer Madonna's verson (not her fan though) but I doubt if she too can sing it well anymore.
You'd be surprised...

Don't watch Strictly but happened to hear the announcer at the end of Countryfile say EP was going to be on the show so decided to sit through it for once. Absolutely fantastic performance, can't believe the comments on here. Are people so used to autotuned manufactured tone dead talentless wannabes they've forgotten what a singer actually sounds like when they just sing without all the mechanical crap to back them up? Or do they really expect someone to still sound exactly the same as they did almost 40 years ago? There was nothing wrong with it, I've listened to it about 8 times by by now and it gets better on each listen, the only fault it had was cutting out half the lyrics. As for talking through some lines it's not an error, it's how she sings the song, there's performances from 2014, 2012 and 1998 where it's done in the exact same way and that's just the ones off the top of my head, there's probably others. Some lyrics are talked through, not actually sung, but still part of the song anyway. No it's not exactly the same as it was, still wipes the floor with modern 'singers' who couldn't hold a note though, and see if your voice is the same as it was in 1978, bet it's not. Oh and there was nothing wrong with her dress either IMO.

I thought this was a noticeably poor performance from her. It seemed liked her range was all over the place (did she drop into a much lower key near the beginning?) and her enunciation was over-exaggerated and grating. It's a song that doesn't really go anywhere and only the chorus stands out, but this was just unpleasant to listen to unfortunately.

I have a strange soft spot for Elaine Paige, don't know why. However, her performance on the results show was definitely out of tune in places. The speak-singing was way too noticeable. They shouldve gone for a current musical theatre performer, but I guess they're not famous enough for Strictly. I mean, other than Elaine, Michael Ball and John Barrowman, there's no one really current unless they've been on X Factor or Britain's Got Talent.

I was looking forward to seeing her in concert a couple of years ago, hopeful of hearing her belt out some show stopping numbers. I have to say it was the worst show I think I have ever seen ( or heard) in my life.

There is no power in her voice anymore, all the songs were sung out of tune, and/or sung in totally the wrong key for her. Her backing singers didn't seem to know what was going on, and the "choreography", ie her moving about the stage, up and down stairs etc. was shambolic, she looked as though she was making it up as she went along, by that, I mean she did not look confident in what she was doing. Totally unprofessional, complete waste of my time and money.

Not at all surprised at viewers comments after her appearance on SCD.

Yes, I was miffed only by the cutting out of some of the lyrics - the performance, as you say was exquisite and a fine treat with the dance accompaniment. Only seems yesterday since I came out of Cats muttering that Elaine's voice was "far too young to be Grizabella". Funny old World.

I hardly recognised her. She has had 'work' done I think.
Yes, and quite badly. She now looks like a Pantomime Dame.

You have to know when to step off the stage and leave good memories behind. The voice has gone. Performing that was a big mistake, but she has always had one hell of an ego.

Has she come out of retirement or something? She sounded quite rusty in her singing.

I wish I hadn't seen/heard it.

EP singing that particular song (back in the day) was very memorable.

So was last night. For all the wrong reasons.

I do wish she hadn't. Not her trademark song. Something else? Fine. But trashing DCFMA? How could she?!

''A third observed: "Oh my, what happened to Elaine Paige...where did that voice go? :/ #strictly."

However, other viewers enjoyed the 68-year-old's performance as well as the dance by Strictly professionals Aljaž Škorjanec and Natalie Lowe that accompanied it.''

Didn't realise she was 68.

What's worrying is that because the guest singer is prerecorded, they most probably did several takes of the song.
And that one was the best.
