Christmas Eve (Sat 24th Dec)

7:30 Coronation Street (30 mins)
8:25 EastEnders (35mins)

Christmas Day (Sun 25th Dec) - all hour longs
5:45 Emmerdale
8:00 Coronation Street
9:30 EastEnders

Boxing Day (Mon 26th Dec) all soaps air in normal Monday timeslots

How can so many of you find time to watch the soaps when they are on, especially on Xmas Day? I know I will spend the day with family, and catch up on Boxing Day, and then miss the Monday soaps as well because it is a family occasion.

The soaps need to be on less over Christmas especially for those who spend Christmas at family parties, and not watching TV.

After stuffing our faces all Christmas day, it's nice to lounge in front of the telly of the evening. Boxing Day is usually the day we have larger get together as a family. So I shall probably watch the Boxing Day EP on Tuesday.

I only watch EastEnders anyway so that makes it easier. With catch up tv I don't see it being a problem anyway.

Not everyone has families or parties to go to.

But as scrabs says catch up tv means no one has to miss anything

Plus I think a lot of people just chill out on the sofa on xmas day eve.

What about those people who don't have families to spend the dsy with? Do they not deserve to be entertained at Xmas?

For those that are busy, they can either use catch up, record them for later or just miss s couple of episodes.

As I'm chief cook snd bottle washer for my family, I don't see much tv on the day. Generally EE is the only.one and I doubt I'll get that this year ss others will want Maigret, but I just record all of them and catch up later, sometimes not till the New Year.

I record and watch later anyway so I will watch them when I can.

I only watch EastEnders so it's not a lot to catch up on.

I will be sat waiting in the dark to blast the old bearded pervert with my trusty sawn-off shotgun.

Bah!

Humbug!

I don't have a large family.
But will spend time with them but then look forward to by second helping of Turkey when the soaps are on and I can just relax!

It wouldn't bother me if they weren't shown over the Christmas weekend as they are normally not shown weekends anyway can't see why it has to be different just because it's Christmas.

Some people don't watch all the soaps, maybe that's why?

I only watch Emmerdale so it would be an hour of my time on Christmas day if I were to watch it live, which won't be the case. I'll most likely be watching via catch up a couple of days later.

The viewing figures for soaps and TV in general are high for Xmas day suggesting lots of people are watching by evening. The ED slot seems pretty early so it may miss out on some viewer's? Personally I watch them on catch up the following morning.

ED is on very early, EE is on very late. Corrie could win the night.

I only watch emmerdale of the evenings but husband hates it so I'll record it as usual and watch when I get time.

I prefer tv over xmas to be as close to normal schedule as possible too many people don't enjoy xmas and all the xmas programmes.

Everyone knows the true meaning of Christmas is: opening presents, pretending to tolerate your family, drinking from breakfast and not stopping until you go to bed, stuffing your face full of a dinner it's taken your mum all day to prepare in the space of fifteen minutes, no longer pretending to tolerate your family, slumping in front of the TV and watching characters even more miserable than you on the soaps.

Family time? What on earth is that?

I was thinking mainly of the elderly or unwell who might not be able to travel or indeed their friends might have passed on as well as their close family. There are some genuinely very lonely people around, and not because they are horrible people who can't make or keep friends.

Also, due to Christmas being predominantly a time for family, many people wouldn't even think to check that their friends have somewhere to go, assuming that they will be with family too so people just don't get invited even by their friends or more distant family.

Have you checked what all your friends, neighbours, distant family are doing? Perhaps somebody whose partner has died and doesn't have kids or whose kids live a long way away? They're the people that tend to fall through the cracks.

Emmerdale has been in that relatively early slot for many years now. They tend to scheduke it against Doctor Who whuch us the reason I never see it live. Even if not still cooking as we eat in the evening rather than afternoon, all hell would let loose if my brother didn't get to see
Who live - it's the one thing all day there would be no compromise on!

Aa an aside, people are talking about EE being on too late but from memory, the second episode in 1986, the biggest year for EE, started at 10pm.

Corrie is up against Call the Midwife which is pretty stiff competition.

Pretty sure it was 87 and featured Angie returning to The Vic after she'd been awol for a couple of weeks following quitting the Dagmar.

To be fair it was the afternoon episode which ended with the "merry christmas Ange" and the 10pm episideconcentrated on the aftermath, Arthurs breakdown and ended with Pauline guessing Den was Vickis father. So not quite as iconic but still well remembered with massive viewing figures, even compared to other shows transmitted that day, esrlier in the evening.

If it's good enough, people will watch, or catch a repeat, or go online now, no matter what the slot. And 10pm really isn't that late eccept for little uns who shouldn't really be watching EE anyway, on any day of the year.

Having the soaps on a Saturday, namely Christmas Eve, is unusual. I may end up forgetting Corrie is even on then.

By the time it gets to 5pm, I'm pretty much itching to get back to my own home. So for me I'm more than happy to flop onto the sofa and get ready for all the soaps to dominate the TV all evening.
