If you enjoy frosty, cold, crisp weather, then make the most
of it as after today the winds switch from the east to our
south-west bringing much milder, cloudier and, inevitably,
wetter weather. Temperatures are forecast to widely reach
double figures all over the country by Wednesday and through the rest of this week.

After a cold and very dry end to November, it seems the
tables have turned as we head closer to Christmas to favour
yet another atlantic flow bringing mild, cloudy and rainy
weather, despite predictions from the Met Office and
many others of a cold snap. And once that happens it can
take weeks for it to clear.

This seems like the norm now at this time of year with any snow being the exception. Can't remember the last time we got snow at Christmas...

The met office were forecasting a cold winter and of course the DE and other bogus newspapers have also been saying of course that we're going to get four months of snow but that's all turned to slush now....

The latest weather charts show no sign of the white stuff
this Christmas.

I think as long as they keep "predicting" that we're going to get the coldest/hottest winter/summer in 100 years or whatever then we're going to keep getting mild wet winters and cool wet summers.

I used to always want snow every Winter but now I'm not really bothered though tbh. You get all excited then when it finally comes all we get is a light flurry then the next dat it's all melted away.

These days I just prefer it milder tbh. I hate frost and I hate cold nights. Hate having to bother putting on huge puffy coats, wooly hats and gloves, and having to put on winter boots just so I don't tumble on the deadly black ice walking down the street. At least if it's mild and wet I can just wear a hoodie or a light rain jacket outside. And I I've got used to it be overcast and drizzly at Xmas anyway.

As far as I'm concerned there are three main types of weather we get at this time of year.

1. Mild and Cloudy (with usually plenty of rain).
2. Cold, Dry and Crisp (with plenty of clear skies and frost).
3. Cold and Snowy.

Which do you like best?

It's the first week of December so trying to predict the weather for the whole month is an exercise in futility.

To be fair, the OP's not as fixated on the weather as the Daily Express.

-8C overnight with frost and fog then sunny but cold next day @ +2 or +3C once the fog lifts is much better weather than +8C overnight with heavy rain and a howling gale and then still windy and heavy rain next day @ +11 or +12C.

The last couple of days here in the West Midlands have been lovely, cold and clear with blue skies and sunshine, much nicer than endless rain and gloomy skies.

The downside of course has been the heavy frost, but even that looks nice in the winter sunshine.

Mild and cloudy. Sliding around on ice is not my idea of fun. Snow is only good if you don't have to leave the house to go anywhere.

Because there is no such thing as "warm and sunny" weather in December. The sun is simply not powerful enough at this time of year to make that happen. It could possibly in theory reach 10c in the middle of the day under clear skies if you are very lucky, (or you live in balmy Cornwall) but generally, your choices at this time of year are limited to cold and dry, mild and wet, or very cold and wet (snow).

And adverts as well.. Every single Xmas advert you see on telly has snow when lashing rain and howling gales would probably be more appropriate.

I'm going to buy you a weather house for Christmas, Steffan. Imagine the daily excitement of wondering if it will be the man or lady who appears each day. I think it would be the perfect gift for you.

What's all that got to do with Christmas Day? It's nearly 3 weeks away and nobody knows what the weather will be then. Except that we are as in every other year, unlikely to get snow falling on Christmas Day. That's it.

The lack of logic is astounding, isn't it?

The fact that the weather is changing from colder to milder means it can change back again within a similar timeframe. But no - because it starts getting wet and mild from tomorrow (later today for some) it must stay like that for the rest of the month.

Most Decembers I remember have had a spell of weather that's closer to being autumnal. Which shouldn't come as a surprise because while the meteorologists like to be neat and tidy, aligning the seasons to months, December is still in the autumn-winter transition period.

Mind you, I do like it being cold on Christmas Day. It brings back childhood memories of getting a new bike and being determined to try it out despite minus temperatures outside.

Except that we are as in every other year, unlikely to get snow falling on Christmas Day. That's it.
Not strictly true. It's quite common for parts of the Highlands to get snow nearly every day from mid-December to mid/late-February.

As often said there is more chance of a white Easter than a white Christmas in the UK.

Apparently it was Charles Dickens who first romanticised the idea of a white Christmas and Hollywood followed suit..

January is nearly always colder than December
