Underused Chararacters
So with Eastenders having spread the use of its characters a lot better this year- across all soaps which characters do you feel are currently least being used to their full potential. Mine are:-
Eastenders Jay- Although he has had far more screen time, the Star storyline was the worst thing they could have done to him. The actor has put in some great performances but as many people have said the writing is inconsistent. Denise- although again far more screentime I have felt a lot of it was with poor decisions. Phil baby. Jordan and Lucas were all either over too quickly or unnecessary twists in my opinion. Steven and Johnny - Both have returned to no real substance or storyline. Donna shrimpy and Kush- I know so many dislike Donna but she is I. Prime position in the centre of the market. Similarly is shrimpy - arguably we won't know all of a characters backstory but with a lot more extras floating around these days he would be prime to be explored more. Kush again- at the centre of the action, capable and has had surprisingly some excellent scenes with Shakil. Hollyoaks I can't help but think the majority of the wrong characters are focussed on. For me the men need most work but I also feel like I would like even more Simone, lots more Sienna and more Nancy, Ellie and Neeta. In addition : James - arguably one of the most complex characters in a long time - he has so much potential to explore, as does Nathan who they have paired up with whiny Cleo. There's also a few new additions I want to see more of. Joel, Ryan and Adam all need time to develop and to make us start caring. I've actually started to really enjoy each of them but I have no investment. In fact the Hollyoaks cast are so very much like marmite it's untrue. |

I have only recently started watching Emmerdale but I also really want to see more Finn- he's a cracking little actor. Other than this the emmerdale cast seem reasonably well split.

Emmerdale:
Victoria Barton & Adam Barton Finn Barton Harriet Finch Brenda Walker & Bob Hope Megan Macey And my biggest pet peeve of them all... The twins! Heath and Cathy Hope are about nine years old now and must have had about five seconds of air time since they were born. I've never known anything like it. All the other kids - across soaps - get used relatively often, but these mysterious twins never show their faces and even the most loyal of viewers could be forgiven for forgetting they exist. Nine years on the show and we haven't heard a peep out of them. Does anyone even know what they look like? |

Carly is always being shown babysitting April - her step-niece - yet her own little brother and sister who live in the village she has nothing to do with. You'd think she'd offer to babysit them over April. |

I've love to see Harriet get more to do on ED. For such a talented actress she is criminally underused.

Eastenders:
Kush - A hugely underrated character with loads of depth and complexity, played by a very competent actor. He was used well in 2015 but has dropped off the radar since then. Give him something with substance. Johnny - Just embarrassingly underused at this point. His scenes are vague, fleeting and add nothing to the show. Give Ted Reilly a chance to prove himself or write the character out. Steven - Just really not working with Lauren, and barely interacts with the Beales. They should be playing up his charismatic and mysterious side but instead he just wanders around doing not very much at all. Abi - Great fun as a character, needs some further development once Max is back. |

I struggle to see the appeal. However I haven't been watching long so haven't seen much. Did the actress used to be on Hollyoaks?
Victoria and Adam i definitely agree with. Also when did they marry? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Hunter As for when Adam and Victoria married it was on the 25th of June 2015. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...dale#Marriages |

Eastenders
Johnny - couldn't be seen any less if he tried. I really like the new Johnny and think he's had enough time to settle in, he just needs anything more substantial to do as he currently seems like an occasional extra. Kush - i'm glad they gave him a break after Shabnam left but she's been gone a while now, maybe it's time for a new love interst (not Denise) and new storylines. Jack - as much as i'm dreading Ronnie's exit i'm really hoping this will open up a new direction for Jack, give him some varying material to work with (not just forgetting all about her and being paired with Honey who i think would make a terrible pairing). Maybe leave him single and explore his past in more depth. Basically explore the character beyond his love life. Steven - where has the dark, brooding menace gone? Lauren's new lapdog is very tedious. Get him and Johnny together and make him interesting again. Vincent - again mellowed into a very bland character and is basically now just Kim's mismatched husband with nothing outside of their relationship. Louise - has been great with the Mitchells but is boring when third wheeling Bex and Shakil. Get her her own love interest and her own storyline. Hollyoaks Holly - always top of my list, yet still remains firmly as a spare part in others storylines. The sexual coercion storyline with Nick sounds in theory quite meaty and something that might finally give the character a decent storyline arc, but considering how badly she's always written in other storylines i won't get too excited that the focus will be on Holly in much detail and is more being used to enhance Nick/Ellie's storyline. Dirk - not sure how long he has to be in the show for to finally be used more! I'd take him over Mac and Diego (is he even still in it) anyday. A storyline that's all about him not Cindy would be nice. Adam - because he's partnered with Maxine my interest tends to be quite low but he seems like a decent character away from her so i'd like him to be used more. Harry - i don't particularly like him that much but he needs to be explored in storylines that aren't all centered around Ste and his many problems. Emmerdale Pete - his storylines just never lead to anything, a few episodes here and there then back to obscurity. Leyla - never seems to be involved in anything big or dramatic and it's a shame as she is brilliant when given something to do other than play second fiddle to Tracy. Harriet - where is she? I was hoping Emma would have confessed her sins to her and become obsessed with getting Harriet as a vicar to absolve her. It could still happen i guess. The character just feels very neglected of screen time and storylines. Jimmy - he's used a lot but in a very repetative way. Does something silly, Nicola goes mad and treats him terribly then for some unknown reason he ends up begging forgiveness. Same old same old. I want businessman Jimmy back, give him back his spine and make Nicola realise she's lucky to have him, not the other way round. Coronation Street Erica - has actually settled in quite well now with Dev and Mary. Maybe it's time to explore her in her own right? Johnny - i'd like to see a more ruthless Johnny (not nasty just less of a pushover). I don't particularly like Jenny but their relationship could be explored more. Neighbours Aaron - for starters give him a proper job! PR agent for your talentless neighbours can't be big business. Ben - considering he's a regular and Angus was only a guest character, he's barely featured in anything yet Angus was involved in quite a bit. Home and Away Roo - now Maddy's gone she seems a bit adrift. Looking out for Matt and Ellie is nice but it's not very exciting.

Shirley in EastEnders hasn't been utilised properly but she usually gets a lot of screentime in January every year so we should see a bit more of her soon.
Susan in Neighbours hasn't had a proper storyline since 2011 and Jackie Woodburne is one of their strongest actresses. I would like to see Susan get a big storyline soon. |
