Who could forget this memorable and menacing scene in the original Straw Dogs (5:20) featuring Peter Vaughan? A great character actor who was at home on stage, fiim or tv, and outlived just about all of the cast of Porridge. RIP

Loved him in Fox, with the wonderful Elizabeth Spriggs as his wife. I have the complete series on DVD, and can really recommend it. His sons were played by Larry Lamb, and a very young Ray Winstone.
Although he was 9 years old than his ex wife Billie Whitelaw, he outlived her by two years. I didn't know it was available on DVD, so thanks for the heads-up Walter. RIP Peter, you were truly one of our greatest British actors. |

He was masterful. Character actors rarely get the proper credit for their mastery while alive, but when they go, boy, you realise the huge gap they leave.
Thank you for the joy and RIP. |

He also featured in a Kate Bush video, for her single Experiment IV. RIP |

I'm sure he once played an SS Officer, whatever role he played he was always consistent and always a very commanding presence.

A truly great character actor. Sad to see his passing, but he has had a great career. Loved him in Porridge, Citizen Smith and Our Friends in the North. Loved him in GOT his scenes were always memorable. RIP Peter.

Sorry to hear of his passing, always found a role, and made it his own.
"A warning to the curious" was very good. |

Very sad news, though not unexpected.
I work next door to his old house, which is now a pub. |

I only know him from Game of Thrones, though I have seen old reruns of Porridge I just didn't realise it was the same guy.
Good age, sounds sudden actually as he has been giving interviews recently I think. RIP. |

I seem to remember Eamon Boland and Derrick O'Connor also played two of his sons.

I thought Fox was a great series and he was wonderful in it. Even though it was on TV many years ago (1980?) I still remember it with great affection. Surprisingly not many people I've mentioned it to over the years seem to remember it. The main scene which sticks in my mind was Ray Winstone dropping the f-bomb when he was in the hospital car park, as it was the first time i'd ever heard someone swear on TV, but it seemed to me entirely appropriate under the circumstances, as any other word simply wouldn't have had the necessary impact to convey the anger and emotion that Ray Winstone was portraying in that moment.
I didn't know it was available on DVD, so thanks for the heads-up Walter. RIP Peter, you were truly one of our greatest British actors.

Also, I dispute he was 93. I looked up his age a few years back and it said born 1920 which would make him 96.
RIP. |

Its strange when you realise that "Genial" Harry Grout only appeared in three episodes of Porridge, you always imagine it was more than that
I loved his portrayal of Maester Aemon in GoT, and I thought the character's reflections on how a lively spirit is slowly and inexorably pulled down in by a weakened and failing body were heartbreaking. And no doubt he was acting with the benefit of bitter experience. (I think this was his most powerful scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pozI5n6A_Io. Even though he often has his back to the camera you can see the intensity of his performance in the face of the actor opposite.) He was blessed to be able to do what he loved until almost the end of his life. And we were blessed to see the fruit of his labour. Memory eternal! |

Well, he was on the radio only a few weeks ago (seeming very sprightly and 'with it') promoting his autobiography, and he said he was nearing 94.
But it's very sad news, he really was one of my all time favourite actors, from The Remains of the Day, to Brazil, Fox, Citizen Smith, GoT and Porridge - a truly versatile and very convincing actor. Talking Pictures channel recently showed an old film with him in the lead - Smokescreen - an unusual whodunnit where he played an insurance man who solves the murder. He was due to appear at a convention organized by that TV channel early next year. R.I.P. Peter. |
