RIP, sad news. The two roles I knew him best for were those he played in Porridge and Our Friends in the North.

Likewise for me

they keep going on about his Game of Thrones appearances.
I suspect those that do, weren't even born when Citizen Smith was on the telly !

On Sky News they're showing a photo of the cast of Euston Films' series, Fox, one of Peter Vaughan's few lead roles.

It was a drama about a criminal family in South London, with Elizabeth Spriggs playing his wife and his five sons (Bernard Hill, Ray Winstone, Derrick O'Connor, Eamon Boland and Larry Lamb).

The picture has Larry Lamb in drag. Don't remember that episode!!

Nor do I, but I do remember the series. Euston Films made some damn good stuff back then, a lot darker than their flagship series Minder

I preferred him in Citizen Smith to Porridge and I've never watched an episode of Game Of Throne so was surprise to hear he was in it.

The newsreader on ITV's main 6:30 news referred to him as 'Grouchy'.

2016 has taken some true greats. Peter Vaughan is one of them for me.
Although he was only in 3 Porridge episodes, he was sublime in GoT at Maester Aemon.

Coincidentally I have just been reading his autobiography Once a Villain. He was greatly amused that although he only appeared in three episodes of Porridge Grouty was the role most people remembered him for. Also a great admirer of Ronnie Barker.

GREAT GREAT character actor- showed just HOW good he was the fact the "Harry Grout " role was so well remembered even though he was only in 3 episodes. Had a much bigger part in the film though and the film was better for it.......
