So, yesterday the worst thing happened. I dropped my 3 week old iPhone 7 at work, and the bottom of the screen cracked like a spider, with a dent also on the top of the phone.

I did have a case on it, but I guess it landed flat on the screen or on that corner then onto the screen.

I don't have any apple care on it but it is still under the warranty.

Asked the local phone stall in town and he quoted me £180 to fix it. I will add only the glass part is cracked.

I went on the apple site and had a check and they said I can mail in or take it into the store, but I have to book an appointment. However there is a caveat that it will be £126.44 to fix it, or I believe £296 if they find any other issues with the phone, but I think they just swap the phone out if that is the case.

So I am stuck with do I take it to the phone repair guy, or take/mail it into apple, they say the send time is 5-7 days.

My concern is the quality of LCD that the phone repair guy uses, whether the touch ID will give me the error 53 code and I know that it voids any apple warranty left.

Sorry for the long post, but it seems an expensive repair.

Personally I will take/send it to Apple as Iphone after been fixed will be still under warranty. If anyone else touches it without being Apple approved, phone will go out of warranty

If you let anyone but Apple do it your warranty is toast, the only logical choice is Apple.

You have up to 60 days after purchase of an iPhone to buy AppleCare+. If you were less than scrupulous you would pay £119 for AppleCare+ today then in a few days claim for the screen repair for which there is a excess charge of £25. You would then be covered for the next 2 years including smashing the screen again.

You would have to be mad to have a 3rd-party replace the screen on a 3 week old iPhone screen thus screwing your Apple warranty.

Won't work! You have to take the iPhone to an Apple Store for an inspection to post-sale-buy AppleCare+ within these 60 days.

DO NOT give it for repairs to unauthorised shops. They do not have access to original parts from Apple and the warranty will be void because Apple determine if it has been opened by someone else (there is a 3d printed logo on the screws!).
You will be risking counterfeit parts and loss of Touch ID functionality.

The only sensible option is taking it to Apple.

Not true. I bought mine by calling up & they ran remote diagnostics on the phone. The only issue I had was that they also wanted me to provide proof of purchase & initially told me that my eBay & PayPal receipts would not be acceptable. I was eventually I was passed to higher level person who put through the sale without me supplying any receipt at all.

According to the Apple UK AppleCare+ webpage

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/products/iphone.html

Important notes

Purchase AppleCare+ with your new iPhone. Or buy it within 60 days of your iPhone purchase:

At an Apple Store (inspection of iPhone and proof of purchase are required)
OR call 0800 107 6285 (requires you to run a remote diagnostic and provide proof of purchase)

Thanks for the info, but I think it would look suspicious if I were to take out the apple care and then file for a repair, I'd probably have to wait a few weeks and I just want the repair done now.

Going to send it into apple, they said 5-7 days and it costs £126.44, a expensive lesson to be extra careful!!

The 60 days, is that the day you order it or the day you've been charged and shipped? I have an iPhone 7 Plus on order from Apple due up to 22nd. Haven't been charged yet.

I would say it's 60 days from the day that the iPhone is delivered just as it would be if you bought it in an Apple Store.

Plus a reminder that buying AppleCare+ is a very good idea. You will still have the option of purchasing AppleCare+.

OK - it seems totally crazy that, if the phone passes these remote diagnostics (which presumably test that it runs correctly) it will be accepted - despite screen damage which would be instantly detected in a store!!!!

There are only a few dozen Apple Stores in the UK. Apple sell phones by mail order as so many people live far from an Apple Store. It would be unreasonable to expect every customer who bought an iPhone online then decided to purchase AppleCare+ in the 60 days post sale to be able to visit an Apple Store.
