Whoever is putting these up on Ebay are very optimistic, judging by the prices they're asking for, not to mention the P&P

Remember buying strips of coloured paper and linking them together so they looked like this. That went all over my bedroom and the more expensive decorations went in the living room.

Did anyone have the giant plastic santa head you put on the wall? Looking towards your left smiling while the eyes faced towards you. Must have been 3 - 4ft. Relatively flat moulded shell.
We also had a rudolf you blew up and hung from the ceiling. 70s and 80s decorations seemed more magical from what I can remember. |

We had a few of the decorations in the links. My Mum and Dad might still have them in the loft. ![]() Quote:

I have my dining room decked out in a retro style every Christmas and I've bought quite a lot of those kind of vintage decorations from Ebay.
I have crepe paper twisted strings across the ceiling, balloons ( that's something people don't tend to use anymore as a Christmas decoration ) a little white and silver tree on the sideboard, and I have vintage Quality Street and Roses tins on the sideboard too. |

![]() They have those shiny open-out lantern things and shiny streamers - red, green, yellow ones - as well from the 70s or 80s - I remember us having them when I was a kid in the mid 80s. It's great going there at Christmas, you feel like you are in a 70s pub!! |

I remember all of those! Some only seeing rather than putting up I'll admit.
[ edit: though to call some of those '70s' is a bit like how they are using the word 'vintage' ] It does seem like 'vintage' in relation to decorations is a sort of shorthand for 'back before we thought it would be OK just to drape a couple of shiny bits of string and some crap LEDs', 'oh but nobody has the time' etc... And for those that go the other way, it's only a competition if you let it become one! Sorry, just letting off some steam there, and I can never remember what counts as 'too early' for having one's home display visible especially as I can't see anyone else's from the window like I normally would in previous years (has *everyone* moved away?) and in spite of Mum's being on already (my fault I went and got the stuff out of the loft). There's a mix of things, some of the 'vintage' is only left in the boxes because it needs repair (better yet, it can be repaired not chucked), but the rest is out there. |

We used to put them up in our living room. One from each corner into the centre, pinned in the middle if they were too long. They looked great when we were kids, but on reflection they were quite tacky!

Same here 😁 And didn't the living room look so bare afterwards!
What made the bareness worse was the solution to displaying all our Christmas cards was to use strings on the wall, from one end to the other. So by Christmas Day, not only was the ceiling more or less hidden by the garlands, but the walls were covered in cards. When everything came down the room felt so empty. |

I still have my childhood decorations from the 60s and use them on my tree every year, including a 60s airfix fairy. lots have broken over the years but I top up every now and then with Ebay , we even have traditional lights on the tree, all multicoloured and frustrating when a bulb goes!
I do it for nostalgic reasons, I loved xmas as a child and like to hold onto that . |
