Interestingly my older siblings call our mother mum whereas the younger of us use mom. Dad was/is just "Dad".

Too many American shows?

This is always hilarious when I've got the children of staff in on "work experience" or on the "bring your child to work" days.

On their induction, I make it clear that they *must* call their parent/relative by their first name whilst in the workplace - there's always that embarrassed attempts and stumble over the m... or d...

Dad is dad and mum is mum/mother, unless I want something then it's "mummmmyyy" accompanied by big eyes.

I always found it weird that David in Coronation Street calls his Mum 'Gail'

That started when he found out that she had considered terminating her pregnancy with him.

My father is from California so I was brought up calling my parents by their first name. I find calling your parents by some kind of formal authoritarian given nickname quite odd

I did write Motherfuhrer on my mum's birthday card a couple of years back!

I'm sure you can work out why on both levels.

As an adult, I called my Mother 'Mum', then 'Ma' and later 'Lassie' (no dog jokes please).

My Father, nothing really, we never talked. He would ignore me & I him. It was that way since my childhood.

It's the same in some parts of the Scottish Borders too.

Being from the north, I call my mum, 'Mam', yet I always buy cards with 'Mum' on them- I was in the card shop the other day and really struggled to find one that said 'mum'. I hate the word Mam, especially in my accent, yet I can't call her anything else!

I'm also a Northerner and this annoys me. It has to Mam.
My sister lives in Manchester now and refuses to buy our Mam a 'mum' birthday card so bought a standard birthday card and creatively wrote Mam on it. She loved it.

Geoff and Dolores.

Even though my Mums name isn't Geoff and my Dad hates having to respond to Dolores...

I was a nanny for an Australian family and was quite surprised to hear the kids call their mum 'mum' - but then they were emotional or unwell or just lovelydovey, they could call their mum by her first name. They would call mum her name in front of me and family member and close friends, but if anyone else was around, it was always 'mum' or 'ma'. It works very well, like there are two levels of 'mum' and I kind of wonder why we aren't all brought up like this.
