I have read several articles about this working in the US, provided that the SIM card is first activated in a tablet.

I don't need voice or text, since all of my messages are sent via WhatsApp/iMessage/Facebook and I use Skype for calls.

Has anybody tried to do this?

No reason it wouldn't work, an EE data sim will even support voice and text (at an expensive rate though), as an example.

3 "Broadband SIMs" - which are sold with time and data allowances preloaded are totally fine with this! You simply create a MyThree account and top it up with some cash credit - which gets used for voice and SMS (and data after the preload runs out) at 321 PAYG rates.

I do it quite a lot.

I usually throw the sims away after the data has run out or the time has expired.

I've now got one of these 24GB three PAYG mobile broadband sims lasting 24 months that I will be using in a smartphone, but not in a mifi.

At least you know if you haven't used all the data in the one month, you can still use it the next month, the month after that and so on until the data runs out, unlike with the phone sims. It's far better value for money than the All In One 20.
