I have a HP 250 G4 running Windows 10. So i can connect to my WiFi router, but no internet on my laptop.

The WiFi signal icon has a yellow ! icon on top of it. I've tried uninstalling the WiFi adapter and restarting the router but still no luck. I then tried connecting via ethernet and still couldn't connect - I turned off wifi, and then the ethernet symbol had the yellow ! within it.

I have reset my router which is a BT Smart Hub and that didn't help. I have tried tethering to my mobile phone which works, and connects to the wifi network, but again no internet.

All my other devices can connect with no issues. I tried Windows troubleshooting on both wifi and ethernet, and I get told 'Ethernet (or wifi) doesn't have a valid IP configuration' I don't know what else to do.

Surely it can't be a fault with the laptop because it happens on both ethernet and wifi. I tried the command prompt and then typing 'reset winsock' fix, but that doesn't work.

I only use Windows Defender which shows no results when doing a scan for issues.

Any ideas before I end up resetting the laptop to factory settings? Something I don't want to do...?

Can you check what IP addresses all your devices have assigned to them? I had an issue with a previous laptop and Smartphone whereby the router always assigned them the same IP address via DHCP. Didn't matter what order I switched them on or off in or whether I used WiFi or cable to the router they always had the same IP address and it was always the laptop that couldn't connect to the interweb.

So that would be a first check.

The next thing to check is that the laptop is actually getting an IP address from the router.

Follow these instructions to display the IP properties

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...cp-ip-settings

If the laptop is not set to get an IP address automatically and has had one entered manually then it may be incorrect or conflicting with another device. If so try setting it to Obtain IP Address Automatically.

When I run a command prompt, then type 'ipconfig', the gateway is a mac address rather than an ip address.

Does it say IPv4 or IPv6 in the IP Address line? IPv6 addresses can look like MAC addresses. If it's IPv4 then I would have expected to see the IP address of the router.

I would check that DHCP is enabled and maybe try

ipconfig /renew

in the command prompt to see if that changes anything.

Roll back your WiFi driver.

I recommend splitting the SSIDs on the SmartHub, same problem as with HH4/HH5 carried over. Also turn the irritating SmartSetup Off on the SmartHub, sometimes W10 won't play nice with it.
