Sorry if this subject has been brought up before - it probably has but I couldn't find a thread on it.

Recently my C: drive mysteriously failed and wiped its contents (it was an SSD, apparently more susceptible to power surges etc).

So I had to get a new drive and have re-installed Windows 7 (Home Premium edition, with service pack 1). After installing firewall & anti-virus software, I'm trying to update Windows. However all I get is the 'Checking for updates' window - for the past 15 hours.

I have a friend who recently had this problem, and a quick google reveals many more people have. The consensus appears to be that it's a tactic from Microsoft to make installing Win7 so painful that people will switch to Win 10.

Conspiracy theory, or is there some truth to this? How much longer am I supposed to wait before my computer finally finds these updates it's 'checking' for, and then how long to them to install? It is just SO FRUSTRATING.

I encountered the exact same problem with a fresh install of W7 a few weeks back.
After a fair few hours of googling and trying to install various microsoft patches manually with no success I was pointed in the direction of http://download.wsusoffline.net/
I used their downloader which grabs the vast majority of windows updates from the microsoft site and lets you install them without going through windows update.
After letting it do it's thing which takes a fair while I could then connect to windows update and update as usual.

This is the way to fix it.

These are the updates that fix the Windows 7 updating "forever" issues.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3102810

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3135445

Used them many times for this exact issue.

Long live Windows 7!
Hear hear....there was a piece in the Guardian about Windows 10 (how to install it etc) and my comment "best way to install Windows 10 is to wipe the drive and install 7 instead" managed to get deleted.

Just don't get what all the fuss is about - the only app I use is Cricinfo's scorecard (which does fill the screen) and the whole darned interface is ugly. As for "Edge"??? Yuk.

The only question I asked Cortana is "How do you get rid of Cortana?".

I's be much happier with Microsoft if, when you bought something with 10 installed, it also ran either XP or 7 alongside (even if they now don't update XP) in the same way you can run Ubuntu alongside 10 (or 7/XP).

Long Live 7!
Long Live XP!!

Microsoft will tell you that every program you run is an "app". I just re-installed GeForce Experience and it asked me if I wanted to let this app (sic) make changes to my computer. Every time they call a bog-standard program an "app" I want to throw something at my monitor. Apps run on my phone; programs run on my computer.

Long Live 7!
Long Live XP!!
Welcome to the 20th century!

Your Guardian comment got deleted as it was off topic.
You don't have to use Edge, just like you don't have to use Internet Explorer on Windows 7.
You don't have to use Cortana.

I get rather irritated by these Neo-Luddites who won't accept change.

Well the latest batch of Win7 updates managed to totally destroy my Office 365 install on my desktop, Outlook, Word 2016, Excel 2016 etc all would not start and all had logging in issues. No repair was possible, uninstall was borked, reinstall said I had 64bit versions installed (even though I didn't) and it refused to run the installer, uninstalling the Windows updates made no difference, after spending some time I gave up and decided to finally give myself to MS rather than try battle with the beast and out with a new bigger SSD and install Windows 10 and started all over again. At least fresh installs are much quicker than in the past.

Now I'm sure it was just one of those things that can happen and although I had backups of my files I hadn't got a very recent image of the OS itself. Anyway it forced me to move my last desktop over to Win10.

That Win7 Enterprise edition has served me well

I have and use Win 7 in a multi-boot on one of my systems and it's recently started claiming that I have never installed any updates, in spite of displaying a list of 144 installed updates spread over the 6 months since I reinstalled it. Most peculiar!

Why 7? Because there are a couple of old programs I like from XP days that will not run on W8 or W 10 but run fine on W7. I still have XP on that system too, but no longer use it. I have W10 on both my systems but use it for nothing - though I keep it up to date.

Long live Windows 7. And my main OS, Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell.
