Hold on a minute, whilst I am grateful and have expressed my appreciation, the poster's first question was "who is fraud action" - not really important in the scheme of things.

If you don't know what to do, it best to answer the questions put to you otherwise the outcome will tend towards suboptimal. |

It was important because these types of scams will often pretend to be from various police departments, FBI, etc. So establishing exactly who it was you'd spoken to was indeed relevant.
I 'phoned the police who put me through to action fraud - the words 'action fraud' did not come up in the threat/words on my computer and were nothing to do with the threat presenting itself on my computer. (Messed up the quote here so put my reply in italics. Back them all up immediately. Otherwise, a future scam (or even a typical everyday computer issue) will guarantee that someday you will lose them. It could be tomorrow. |

To conclude: Downloaded and ran Malwarebytes which picked up PUP threats and cleared them.
I've been using the paid for version of Spybot anti-virus but it didn't pick up the threat. Not happy about that. I'm now looking to get better protection, has anyone used Kaspersky? It's $49.99 per annum. |

You don't get better protection by spending more on AV products, you update and patch Windows, you update the browser, you update java, flash etc and keep them all up to date and then watch what links you're clicking on and be careful to click on only reputable websites and back up your data regularly.
All of that is 99 times more effective than any antivirus. |

If you want to shut down your machine just hold the power button for 6 seconds..it'll then shut down and you can restart and clear out the junk crap.

The following are some recommended tools: SpyHunter - http://guides.uufix.com/Spyhunter_Download.php TDSSKiller - media.kaspersky.com/.../tdsskiller.exe AdwCleaner - toolslib.net/.../1-adwcleaner NOD32 Online Scanner - www.eset.com/.../online-scanner-popup Microsoft Safety Scanner - www.microsoft.com/.../default.aspx Malwarebytes - www.uninstalltips.net/malwarebytes.php |
