New TV: Samsung K6300 Curved
- 3 x HDMI (One is used for SkyHD+ Box)
- Composite In (AV)
- Component In (Y/Pb/Pr)
Guide

Old DVD Home Theatre System: Panasonic HT-500
- TV Audio In (R & L)
- Video Out
- S-Video
- AV Scart
Guide

Is there a way to set this up please?
I would like to have the DVD Home Theatre available for the TV/DVD & Sky.

My best attempt so far, was connecting the scart between the DVD/HT to the SkyBox (this allowed the sound to go through, whilst the HDMI dealt with the video). But this had undesirable delay between the video and audio.

Then I used a lead for video out on the DVD/HT to the Y Component In.
This display the DVD video on the TV, but the Aspect Ratio was all wrong?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated, I'm an idiot when it comes to HT setups.

Not sure there is any easy way to connect the two units together. Certainly not if you want things like audio from the TV tuner sent back to the Home Cinema system so you can get sound from Freeview over the HC speakers.

To be honest you might be better off putting the Panasonic system on eBay or Gumtree or whatever and buying something new.

If you must have an all in one then this Panasonic system from Currys would do OK

It has Audio Return Channel over HDMI which means you get audio from the TV sent back to the HC system. Which should include sound from the Sky box plugged into the TV. And of course it's a Blu-Ray player as well.

Or for a bit more money a "grown ups" system

Not a one box solution but Yamaha do some very fine kit and it has plenty of room to expand your system in the future if needed.

Thanks Chris for the links.
If it were for myself, I would get a whole new audio system which uses HDMI.

I think I just need a way to output the audio from the TV to the DVD/HT.
I'm not bothered about having surround sound for Sky or the DVD either really.
I generally watch movies from USB.
Being able to not have surround on all the time would be desired.

I may give it another going over with the connections and see if I have any luck, but otherwise I'll ask them to purchase a newer system.

There is no direct way to get audio from the TV to the surround system. The TV only has an optical digital audio out and the surround system only has an analogue audio input.

So therefore you need a converter box between the two such as this

Thanks very much Chris for looking into this for me.

For the price of the converter, I may just give it a go and see if that works for now.

I do see it says "Note: The SPDIF input must be Stereo PCM, please configure the output of your device. It won't work with Dolby 5.1."

If it still doesn't give the results the person is looking for. I may just advise them to get a completely new audio system.

Thanks again.

That Panasonic Home Cinema kit has Dolby ProLogic and Super Surround. Both of these will take a stereo audio signal (exactly as you'd get via the optical to stereo convertor) and spread the sound over all of the speakers. Have a look at the manual. Lip sync may be a problem, this is from the two star reviews of the product via the above web link. There also seem to be problems with the supplied power supply.

Quote.

I bought this to connect a new Panasonic TV, with digital output only, to my Arcam stereo with phono inputs. Having read the reviews, it appeared to be what I needed. However, although it puts the sound through the stereo, there is a perceptible delay between the picture and sound, making watching musical performances in particular impossible. There does not appear to be any way to adjust this. Disappointed.
