I have a memory of a Porridge episode where Fletcher and at least one other escapes from prison. Fletcher changes his mind, telling another escapee that he doesn't want to spend the rest his life looking over his shoulder, after which he returns to prison.

I've looked through the list of episodes and can't find one that fits. Am I remembering it wrong?

You're thinking of the film.

A prisoner escapes, taking Fletcher & Godber hostage so that they don't give the game away.

Once let go Fletch & Godber have to work out how to break back in.

I remember in one of the episodes, they go out to dig a drainage ditch (or something), and he pops to the pub

A Day Out

Robert Gillespie as a trendy vicar who suddenly changes his mind when he hears there are some prisoners about

Rev: Verger, why don't you go and check that the church door is locked??
Verger: Why??
Rev: You heard him, there's a bunch of dangerous criminals on the loose!!

It also features Phillip Jackson (Insp. Japp from Poirot) as a hippy prisoner nicknamed Dylan

The breakout i arranged during a game of football with a team of celebrities. When the 'celebrities' turn up they're found to be from the lower end of the alphabet and nobody recognises any of them. Quite prescient!

Funniest scene in the film is a long shot of the prison after the escape with the prisoners overheard singing "Nymphs and shepherds, gone away, away" and a furious McKay yelling at them to shut up.

'You'd expect one odd con to tunnel out, or go over the wall on a rope ladder....but three of 'em, driving out...in bus!'

'Which ones the Goodie?'

I love the lines from the film where the governor and others are standing on the sidelines watching the game.
Governor :" Well what about the Liverpool comedian chappie - Jimmy Tarbrush ?"
McKay "Buck, sir"
Governor "Yes - Buck Tarbrush !"
Fletcher (scoffing ) "Buck Tarbrush !! We'll be lucky to get Basil Brush !"

I was never keen on the film. Something just felt flat about it.
