Its not like I was saying I was offended or overreacting in any way, I was merely trying to get the point across that I am in no way saying to the people who want a UNIT spin off shouldn't want that, so I don't understand why those people who do want it seem to think it's their job to lecture on why I should want it. Me saying I don't find the idea interesting in theory is as valid a viewpoint as someone saying they do.
I've noticed on threads that rather than focus on the discussion, you sometimes decide to get personal instead. Comments like 'pipe down' because you don't like what someone has said are definitely 'not cool' and certainly not anything approaching constructive discussion. The difference for me is that the Doctor isn't one person in an organisation following rules, doing something because he's told, and going to specific locations because he has to. He's a free traveller, going places because he want's to, or because he gets lost, or just because he picks a place at random. Doctor who may be formulaic, but it's the feel I'm talking about. You may like the idea of formal missions with rules, objectives, people giving orders etc, but I don't particularly. Also, what's wrong with putting Doctor Who in an elevated status? I would have thought most people who take the time to post on here regularly do think of it with an elevated status to one degree or another. Here you cite the possibility of interesting characters, but at the same time are negative about the characters in Class, which you wouldn't have been able to comment on with certainty at the concept stage, just like you couldn't with a potential UNIT spinoff. Good characters can sometimes make even a weak concept enjoyable, but as with Class, and pretty much with any show ever, you can't know whether the characters will be enjoyable to you or not, so when talking in theory about a show, we can only judge on what we know, not what we think. That's why, talking about it in theory, right now, rather than some imagined future, with the idea that it would be about UNIT, and may or may not have Kate and Osgood, then the idea just isn't something that interests me. The 'manner' is just me giving my reasons the best way I can express them. As I've already said, I'm not judging anyone who want's such a thing, and I've also said that were it a reality, despite my reservations i'd be open minded enough to give it a chance as I did with Class even though I thought that was an uninteresting concept. All I'm saying is that if someone is asking me in theory whether I am interested in UNIT as a focus for a spin off, then hypothetically speaking no I'm not, and at this stage it seems like it would be a dull focus for a spin off to me, where to me there are more interesting potential spin-off's that could happen. Those things which I think are more interesting might be things that, as a theoretical concept could sound unappealing, dull, or unworkable to you, and if that were the case, and I started a thread similar to this one pitching what I felt would be a good focus for a spin off, then you, giving your honest opinion, might come onto that thread and state that the idea, as a concept, sounded unappealing to you, and perhaps try to explain some of your reasons why, which is exactly what I did in this thread. |

What do you define as constructive discussion though?
Note the conversation between me and Nelson_de_souza for example. I've said that I have no interest in a UNIT spinoff, and Nelson has commented to me reasons why he/she thinks it is interesting. Opposing views being discussed calmly with no getting personal. That is constructive discussion to me, even though I'm talking to someone with an opposing view, it doesn't have to get snappy or involve digs. |

Not telling someone to 'pipe down' because they are saying something which differs from your opinion for a start.

But personally, I don't see it as such. |

I always thought that UNIT were ripe for a spinoff, wonder why this was never considered?

I thought UNIT were under cover in Holby City.
![]() I'm sure Gemma said as well she got the Holby City gig because the producers spotted her in Doctor Who, so if UNIT can claim her back now.... |

That's all well and good, but when Nelson explained to you why he thinks he's right and you are wrong, you accused him of "judging you." I wonder if Nelson agrees that your manner of discussion with him is constructive?
If he does, then that's great. But personally, I don't see it as such. |

It's quite clear that was about judging my opinion, as we clearly talked just fine after that. I don't know why you are trying to cause trouble where there is none, but I'm not going to be drawn into it.
Reassess where exactly the trouble begins, that's all I'd say. And that's the end of my input. |
