'Tories Braced For Charges Over South Thanet'
Guido sources say that Conservative HQ is bracing itself for the police investigation resulting in criminal charges http://order-order.com/2016/12/07/to...-south-thanet/ Quote:
South Thanet misspending a not an Electoral Commission matter. It is a police matter and potentially a criminal offence under sections 81, 82 and 84 of the Representation of the People Act 1983. Back in June Craig Mackinlay, the Tory who beat Farage, failed to block police extending the time available for their investigation of his election expenses spending. The Tories – in a very rare move – tried to block the police from further investigating the campaign. Guido believes that the South Thanet campaign will prove to be the biggest overspend by any political party in any individual seat ever.
The Tories spent over £200,000 on the South Thanet campaign, when they were only allowed to spend £15,000! All part of Cameron's "Keep Farage out at all costs" mantra.Well it looks increasingly as though Craig Mackinlay could be out on his ear soon, and the ballot result deemed as void. |

Oddly in the end this helped ensure we had a Tory majority for the referendum - which Cameron lost and the side Farage supported won.
Farage as you might say lost the battle but won the war. |

There's a big thread about it which has been going since May. It fizzled out a bit pending the investigation. Hence, there was also a second thread. Glad to see it raised again though.

All part of Cameron's "Keep Farage out at all costs" mantra. Well it looks increasingly as though Craig Mackinlay could be out on his ear soon, and the ballot result deemed as void. In particular, the Tories pumped massive resources into the the Rochester (to get rid of Mark Reckless - successful), Clacton (to get rid of Douglas Carswell - unsuccessful) and South Thanet (to prevent Nigel Farage from being elected - successful) seats. I'd want to see court cases and fines in these instances (see http://www.electionexpenses.co.uk). However, progress is glacial (in contrast with what happened with the Liberal Democrats and UKIP supporters have every right to feel aggrieved at what went on. Not only did UKIP voters have to contend with a crude electoral system but one that the Tories were deliberately trying to nobble with shed loads of undeclared cash and resources. It is open to UKIP, and indeed any other, voters to ask the Electoral Commission what it is doing in respect of investigating the allegations made by Channel 4 News about Conservative party election expenses: http://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/complaints (there is a valid email address present) It would be outrageous if they just went after the Liberal Democrats but then let the Tories get away scot-free. |

Oh that's ok then.

I would hope that this eventually results in some sitting Tory MPs being disqualified from office and reruns taking place, e.g. in South Thanet. Electoral corruption on this scale does deserve full jail sentences (and not the suspended sentence rubbish) otherwise there's be nothing to separate the UK from Russia, Angola, Uzbekistan and the rest. |

The issue here is the sums involved could be said to have basically "bought" the election.
Whereas other electoral expenses shenanigans in no way changed the result. |

UKIP might prefer to keep their heads down over this, lest someone mentions the investigation into European Parliamentary money being used improperly.

There's a considerable difference between the two cases, both in essence and magnitude. That aside, I'm not sure their is sufficient evidence to support the EU/UKIP case.

What happened in May 2015 is an order of magnitude worse since it is effectively the buying of parliamentary seats in a supposed democracy. At least I can see the difference.

^ I fully agree - there's a world of difference between trying to rig/buy a general election and one or two MEPs having their hand in the till (still to be proven).

Really, cannot you (of all forum members) not see the extent of the Tory malfeasance and the way that Tory supporters now are coming in with a bit of diversion and comparison to try to mask their party's dubious villainy?
