Car sputtering and stalling
I've noticed months ago my Passat diesel car would randomly stutter and losing power and suddenly there was nothing happening when I put my foot on the gas. It's happened maybe 3 times but after a few hours was fine on long journeys. I was in stop/start traffic lights for 5 minutes last night and it made a sputtering nose and lost all power. I put my food fully down on the gas and nothing was happening. Clutch is fine but I noticed a slight metalic/rubber smell during all this. It eventually moved along and I went to work and 6 hours later it was fine again going home. I had a MOT in late October so if I take it back I'm not sure what I'm going to ask them to do/look for? should I just tell them the problem and ask for a service?

Could be the fuel injectors and/or EGR valve needing cleaned or even replaced

Yep, classic EGR symptoms, maybe able to be cleaned but usually replaced. You will find when it is done you will feel like your driving a new car and MPG will drastically increase.
