Sorry if this is a question that has already been asked.
I presume this sound effect is when the signal/speed isn't strong enough on the internet
If so is it my area internet speed/signal or is it a global thing so everyone gets it
I find it a bit annoying but prepared to put up with it occasionally

It happens when the server at has lost it's input audio - perhaps the upload from Strood is having problems or the remote studio has lost power or internet connectivity - probably caused by Internet congestion either way. It is a pretty complex chain.
Back in the 1970s, when Caroline had been off the air for some time, the seagulls & waves recording was used then as part of test transmissions - a symbolic sound of music, emerging from the "Natural" sounds from the sea.
Just used for a different reason now, but still appropriate I feel.
When you just get silence, it is probably down to your own connection's shortcomings - contention ratio at busy times perhaps & running out of buffer.

Thanks for answering so promptly, appreciate it.
I never realised it had been used in Caroline's history before

I'll upload a link to my recording of Caroline's return Easter, 1979 later on today Pubcrawler recorded from an old Pye valve radio to cassette! You will hear the "Original" seagull sounds on there.

So it predates the Classic FM 'birdsong' tests by many years!

I suppose it does - it is on track 2 BTW after the gap, 1/4 of the way along.....
The only original recording of this, went down with the Mi Amigo.

Yes in its offshore days it was frequently overlaid with occasional dings of the Caroline bell during tests prior to return to air. Always a very strong clue it was the lady on her way back.

15th April 1979 - a few parts lost due to the C120 tape breaking, but I started recording around 10 am - ending around 12.30.

The first short part, was from 1978 October - at the time Radio Mi Amigo ended their contract with Caroline, followed by an off-air winter, when the boat nearly sank, only to be saved (again) by Peter Chicago.

Thanks for sharing
No problem, It's from quite a large archive of tapes I have - only some converted to Digital. Several had to be recased, mainly due the the pressure pad deteriorating with age. I have some of RNI as well.

Will download the Caroline recordings. Remember clearly that Sunday in 1979 and being amazed to hear the late Tony Allan re-starting Caroline.

If these RNI recordings are not generally available eg on Azanorak please share if you have time.

Many thanks

From the bottom of my heart I thank you very much for uploading these recordings.
I made some recordings myself on the very same day (roughly the same times too!) which got lost somewhere between my many house moves over the years. But they were nowhere near as good a quality as the ones you did.

A combination, of an old Pye valve radio, a National Panasonic cassette recorder, a C120 & c90 cassette in the past + some patience & fiddling on my part to transfer them to Digital more recently...
It would be a good idea to download them to your computer, as the Zippyshare files will not stay online forever. I am going through my archive & will see if I can find some other material, that will give you a bit more "Old Caroline - for Christmas"

It is great to hear the dull 60hz rumble of the generator when the Mic was turned on.
That is one of the things that made Mi Amigo Caroline unique.

I've downloaded all three recordings now.
Yes I agree it is very atmospheric to hear the famous Mi Amigo 60hz generator hum, It still features on Caroline to this very day in the background of the Tony Allan "Loving Awareness is free..is free.." voiceover.
Also, thanks to Shazam I can find out the titles and artists of some of the mysterious tunes that were played on that test transmission, including that cheesy instrumental at the end of the first recording which has bugged me for years.

There you are, a project for you - to digitize all the music & edit in the Tony Alan links....then You can upload it......
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7dSPCeGi3M this might give you a start....

The 60Hz generator tone, is of course distinctive & a reminder of the USA origins of most of the equipment on the Mi Amigo, if it had been run at the more usual UK 50hz, the Transmitter cooling fans would have run slower & there would have been a danger of overheating. They had a bit of a problem with UK record decks, getting the right size drive pulleys proved to be a problem, so the albums ran slightly slow, not so noticeable with singles though.
Perhaps this one should also have been included - still very relevant, especially at Christmas...

A personal top 30 from Oct 1978 - presented by Stuart Russell (AKA Nigel Harris) There is a bit of lightening interference, as a storm died away. Brings back memories of when I was around 28
